Rubi Ramirez Project

Rubi Ramirez is famous for her documentary style of filmmaking where she incorporates both literature and history/social studies into narratives on topics important to her.

In her video "The Quiet Ones," she incorporates literature into narration and on-camera reflection exploring the concepts of introverts and extroverts.

Her video "Identity" explores her youth growing up as the child of immigrants and her experiences here in America as well as two years living in Mexico. In this video, Rubi reflects on how her struggles were analogous to Maxine Kong Kingston's in "The Woman Warrior."

You will create a film incorporating literature and social studies into an exploration of a contemporary issue of your choice. This project does NOT need to be as long as Rubi's projects...

This can be done in one to three minutes and you should be very careful about going beyond four minutes.

Video Requirements:

  • Explore a concern of yours with the contemporary world.

  • Include discussion of an historical or contemporary figure related to your topic.

  • Include discussion of a literary work related to your topic.

  • A voiceover narration.

  • Yourself discussing your topic "Rubi Ramirez" style.

  • Visuals and "B-roll" video.

  • Do not use any copyrighted music. Use of historical images, video clips, and literature is fine under acceptable use guidelines for educational work.

You should write your entire narration and on-screen discussion before you start to film. Fill out the form below to submit your document.

Here is the new form! Due May 25th.

This is NOT a team project! You may have others help on your film or even be in the film, but you are responsible for writing and completing your own project with your own thoughts and literary/historical topic of concern.

Form for submission of your final project. Due June 7th. This project will be shown during finals week.
