Logging in and setting up your computer
There is a lot here. But it is all important if you want your computer to work well for you.
1. Logging in
When you sit down at a computer, you need to log in. Your screen will look like this at first.
Every class has an account on the computers. Logging in keeps your stuff separate from other classes that come into class. The first time you log in, you need to log in as "other" and then enter your username and password.
I'll tell you your username and password.
When logging in for the first time, you will be asked to sign into your Apple account. You don't want to do this. Click the skip this step and confirm that you don't want to skip.
Next it will ask if you want to enable Siri. Don't enable Siri unless you have a real need to talk to your computer,
2.
Open System Preferences
3. Set up Sound output.
Click the sound preferences
Click the Output tab and select "Line out" for the sound output. Go to Pandora or Soundcloud and see if you can hear out of your headphones. If they don't work, check to see if they are plugged into the computer's headphone output jack. Ask me if you need help.
Finder Preferences
Go to the Finder menu at the top left and select Preferences.
If you have a program running, you will see the menu for that program, not the Finder. Click outside that program's window to access the Finder.
With the General tab clicked, check all the checkboxes and set New Finder windows to show your Documents.
You should see your hard drive on the top right of the desktop and maybe the server if you used "connect to server." to connect to the server.
Click the Sidebar button and turn everything on in the sidebar.
The Dock
Your Dock is where you put programs and folders so you can get to them quickly. It doesn't show all the programs that are on your computer.
Open a finder window by finding the happy mac face.
and click on Applications. You will see all the applications that are on your computer.
Find Chrome, drag it do your Dock or if it's already open Drag it over.
Find Garage Band and drag it to your Dock.
Do the Getting Started in Garage Band lesson. Just have fun with it.
