Obiwan
Here is the project you are creating:
This is a long project and it is super important that you do not lose steps along the way. Start by creating an After Effects folder in your documents folder if you already have not done so. All files must be saved into this folder!
1. Go to the folder of sharing and find the Obiwan folder. Drag the Obiwan folder to your desktop and then drag it into your After Effect folder. Do this or things will go badly later, I promise.
2. Open AE and drag the three video files (.mov) in the folder to your project window.
3. Drag Obiwan and the interior to the timeline with interior on the bottom and Obiwan on top.
Garbage Matte
4. Select the Obiwan layer (single-click), choose the pen tool, and draw a shape around Obiwan that is big enough to keep him in it through all the frames.
5. Render this as a movie file for use later. Follow the rendering a movie instructions here and call this shot Garbage Matte. You will be using this video as part of a larger video later, so save it to your Obiwan folder.
Save your AE file also and put it into your Obiwan folder! Name it tonyf_obiwan_001.aep
It is very important that you put the Obiwan folder inside your After Effects folder, rendered your garbage matte file and saved your obiwan_001.aep file into the Obiwan folder. This keeps everything together and nothing will get lost.
Greenscreen
1. Select the Obiwan layer. Effect > Keying > Keylight
2. Use the eyedropper to select the color green in the obiwan layer.
3. Set View = Screen Matte
4. Open the Screen Matte twirler and adjust Clip Black and Clip White so that Obiwan is white and the background is black. Leave the shadow so it is gray.
5. Set View = Final Result and it should look good.
File>Export> Add To Render Queue. Follow the rendering a movie instructions here and call this shot Greenscreen.
Light Sabers!
1. Layer > New > Solid
2. Effect > Generate > Beam
3. Set Length =100, set inside color to white and outside color to your choice (Obiwan had a blue saber).
Animating the saber:
4. Press stopwatch for Starting and Ending Points in the Beam Effect Controls.
5. Click button for Starting point and put it at the hilt of Obiwan’s saber handle. Click the Ending Point button and put it where the saber ends.
6. Move the timer to the end of a motion and re-position the starting and ending points.
[BE CAREFUL NOT TO DRAG THE LAYER and don't double-click the layer!]
7. Animate saber for entire clip. DO NOT ANIMATE EVERY FRAME
Export this as a movie file for use later. Follow the rendering a movie instructions here and call this shot obiwan-saber
Grievous
Drag Greivous to the timeline.
Render out this shot, name it grievous.
Greivous' Sabers
1. It's hard to see Grievous' saber handles. So create a white layer behind him to make it easier:
Layer > New > Solid and make it white. Put the solid color layer under the Grievous layers so you can see what’s going on better.
2. Layer > New > Solid Name it Grievous saber 1
3. Effect > Generate > Beam
4. Set Length =100, set inside color to white and outside color to your choice.
5. Animate the saber and repeat for the other saber.
6. Use Edit > Spit Layer to cut the layers and move the saber to the front or back of the characters.
Export this as a movie file for use later. Follow the rendering a movie instructions here and call this shot grievous sabers.
Hint: Use Edit> Split Layer to make the saber move in front of Grievous and then in back.
Motion Blur
Turn on the switches for motion blur on the saber layers and for the composition.
Render this out as "motion blur"
Color Correction
To blend your colors, Layer > New > Adjustment layer, then apply Effect > Color Correction > Photo Filter to give the whole thing a color cast that blends the layers together better.
Export this as a movie file for use later. Follow the rendering a movie instructions here and call this shot Color Correction.
