Color Adjustment with Adjustment Layers

In this assignment, post your adjusted image and the original to your website on your photoshop page. Include a description of what an adjustment layer is and what a histogram shows. You can use my image below or even better, one of your own.

1. Open one of your photos in Photoshop.

2. Create a Levels Adjustment layer by clicking the adjustment layer button and selecting Levels.

You can also click on the Adjustments Tab and select the histogram icon.

Levels shows a histogram of all the pixels in the image. The pixels to the left are the dark pixels and to the right are the bright pixels. An image looks more appealing if it spans all shades of black to white. It will look "milky" or low contrast if there is a mountain of pixels in the middle.

3. Drag the two triangles below the histogram to just where the mountain of pixels starts and ends.

4. Drag the middle one until the picture looks the best. The middle triangle sets the mid-tone of your image and moving it around can improve your image quite a bit.

5. Create another adjustment layer and select Curves.

Curves works with the histogram of values but in a way that lets you adjust the values more.

6. Create an "S" curve to increase the contrast of your image.

7. Switch the RGB selection to Red to adjust just the red pixels. a slight change in the mid-point of the line is usually all you want to do when you are adjusting the colors.

8. The red, green, and blue channels to either increase or decrease those colors to make your image look as best as possible. This is a matter of taste so just play.

9. You can adjust your adjustments by moving the opacity of the adjustment layers. You can also turn them on and off with the eyeballs.

Post your adjusted image to your website on your Photography page with the original and the adjusted image side by side. Include a description of what an adjustment layer is and what a histogram shows.

To see your histogram in the camera, press the play button to view an image and then press the Display (display) button a couple times until you see the histogram.

press one more time to see the color histograms. You can see from these histograms that there is too much red and green in the shot.
