Camera Sound Settings

For Canon Video Cameras:

1. Press the little camera button on the bottom right of the screen or the house button top left. The little camera skips the next step.

2. Go to the Main Functions. (you skipped this step if you pressed the little camera button).

3. Page down the buttons until you see Mic. Level. It should always be set to M (Manual) unless you are running and shooting and don't have time for manual.

4. Press Mic. Level button.

5. Press the arrows to adjust the sound when the person is talking so it is bouncing around the 12. It should NEVER get close to Zero!

Silence should register a couple bars max.

The mic should be clipped on your interviewee and the adjustment should be made while they are talking at their normal volume. The same voice they will be using when recording starts.

Remember the rule of thirds when framing your shot.

For T5i Cameras and above (lower numbers have no manual control).

1. Make sure you are in movie mode and click the menu button.

2. Go to the recording settings menu that looks like the picture below.

Sound recording should be set to Manual.

3. To adjust the manual settings, press the Set button.

You will then see the recording levels and be able to set the level while your subject or actor talks.
