04 First Part 3 (Gradient Shading)

  • Open your hard drive and navigate to you highest version of first and open it

    • File> Save as and version it up

    • Got to your library pallet

    • Select your symbol

    • Click the lines in the top right corner

    • Select duplicate

    • Don't change the name and say ok

    • Double click on your new symbol

    • You should no longer see a edge to the colored background box

    • Choose your Eraser Tool

    • Make sure the faucet setting is selected and remove all fill color from the character (well you can leave some small details if you want like the eyes and whatnot)

    • In your library click on but don't double click your original symbol so it shows in the little library window but you still are on the empty copy in the work area

    • Click on your color pallet and choose Radial Gradient

    • Double click on the black gradient swatch and then click the light skin tone to select it and then do the same with the white swatch and the dark skin tone If you are still confused, watch this.

    • Use you Paint Bucket Tool to fill the face

    • Click and hold on the Free Transform Tool to select the Gradient Transform tool

    • Click on the newly filled skin area to show how the gradient is being used

    • Use the scale handle

    • and the shape handle

    • To make the gradient fit your area better

    • When you are satisfied with the result

    • make sure to deselect this gradient before proceeding

    • Return to the color pallet and change from a Radial Gradient to a Linear Gradient

    • Fill the Neck and use the Gradient Transform Tool to adjust (sometimes you need to zoom out to find the handles the view percentage window can be handy for this)

    • Use the Radial Gradient for the hair and the Linear Gradient for the shirt and complete filling your image.

    • Press Command S to save

    • Press Command Q to quit Flash

    • Connect to the server Command K and turn that fabulous piece of artwork in because you are done!
