Epyaxa

suppl. V p.220

Epyaxa

The wife of Syennesis of Cilicia. Accompanied by Cilicians and Aspendians, she came to Cyrus the Younger during his military campaign and gave him enough money to pay his solders' wages for four months. <30> At her request, and to honour her, a parade was held by Cyrus's army, which was made up of Greeks and barbarians, on the plain at Tyriaeum. After it, Epyaxa was most amazed at the leadership of the Greek charge, and the marching and order of the Greeks. Cyrus had Epyaxa accompanied home from Lycaonia by Menon and his soldiers, following the shortest route. <40> When Cyrus arrived at Tarsus via Cilicia, she had already been back home for five days, and, with difficulty, managed to persuade her husband Syennesis to have a conciliatory attitude towards Cyrus, whose army had plundered his city and royal palace out of revenge for Menon's poor handling of his soldiers (Xen. anab. I 2, 12-27).
