14) Dio of Alexandreia


A friend and student of Antiochos of Askalon. Cic. Acad. II 12. Ind. Acad. Herc. col. 35. In the year 56 BCE, he was at the head of an embassy to Rome, which the restitution of Ptolemaios Auletes allegedly thwarted. He was poisoned at Rome, at the request of the king. Strab. XIV 796. Cass. Dio XXXIX 14. Cic. pro Cael. 23. 51. <50> According to Plut. quaest. conviv. I pr., he had also composed some symposium speeches. On him, also cf. nr. 13 above. There is another Dio, who is not this Dio and who is otherwise completely unknown, mentioned in Cic. ad fam. IX 26 as Dio philosophus. The same is true of the Δίων φιλόσοφος Ἐφέσιος in Kaibel IGI 1149, 1. Zeller Ph. d. Gr. IV 609, 1.
