Ti. Claudius Nero 249

vol. III p.2776-2777

249) Ti. Claudius Nero

As P. f. Ti. n., he was the grandson of nr. 248 and cousin of nr. 246. As praetor, he was stationed in Sardinia with a legion in 550 = 204, and from there he sent grain to Scipio in Africa (Liv. XXIX 11, 11. 13, 2. 5. 36, 1). In 552 = 202, he became consul (Fasti Cap. Fast. fer. Lat. CIL I2 p. 57. Chronogr. Idat. Chron. pasch. Liv. XXX 26, 1. 27, 1. Cassiod.); <page break 2776/2777> he allegedly lead a fleet of 50 ships to his province of Africa, and he held command with P. Scipio with the same imperium (Liv. XXX 27, 1-5). He gathered and prepared his arms very slowly (ibid. 38, 6f.), he had to last through difficult storms on the sea-journey over, and he was finally forced to land at Caralis. <10> While he was repairing his ships there, winter began; nobody was inclined to extend his time in office as consul, so in the end he lead his fleet back home as a private individual (ibid. 39, 1-3). Later, Scipio allegedly used to say the following: Ti. Claudii primum cupiditatem, deinde Cn. Cornelii (the consul of 553 = 301) fuisse in mora, quominus id bellum exitio Carthaginis finiretur (ibid. 44, 3), though these words are hardly authentic.
