C. Claudius Centho 105

vol. III p.2694-2695

105) C. Claudius Centho

Most likely the son of nr. 104 and the father of nr. 103, he was a legate of the consul P. Sulpicius at the start of Second Macedonian War in 554 = 200. <page break 2694/2695> Immediately after the Romans crossed over to Greece, he was sent off to terrify Athens which was under siege (Liv. XXXI 14, 3. 22, 5. Zonar. IX 15); he didn't only complete this mission, but he also took on a bold and successful campaign against Chalkis in Euboea, one of the main weapons stores for the king. The city was taken, the weapons destroyed, the large warehouses set on fire, and the statues of Philippus were overturned. <10> Next, too weak to lay claim to Chalkis, Claudius returned with a huge amount of plunder (Liv. XXXI 22, 8-23, 11. Zonar.), and set up base in Piraeus (Liv. XXXI 22, 5. 25, 2). When the Macedonians restarted their attack against Athens, they were driven back by him again (Zonar.).

[from suppl. I p.318]

Claudius is, at any rate, the same C. Centho, who asked M. Cincius Alimentus (vol. III p.2557 nr. 6) a harsh question, and received an even harsher response (Cic. de or. II 286). <50>
