A. Manlius 9

vol. XIV p.1153-1154

9) A. Manlius

He was the brother of M. Manlius Capitolinus nr. 51 (Liv. VI 20, 2) and was himself only referred to with a praenomen and nomen, not with a cognomen. The fasti of the tribuni militum consulari potestate in Livy and Diodoros list him three times in the century after the Gallic disaster; <page break 1153/1154> of course, the ms. tradition is somewhat corrupt (cf. CIL I2 p. 121-125). Manlius became tribune for the first time in 365 = 389 in a purely patrician collegium with six places (Liv. VI 1, 8. Diod. XV 22, 1. Without praenomen Macrob. Sat. I 16, 22). The legend that Camillus was dictator and made a campaign against the Volscii in this year (vol. VII p.339f.) has Manlius set up camp outside Rome to protect the city while that was going on (Liv. VI 2, 8). <10> The year of his second tribunate is give variously: according to Liv. VI 5, 7 and Diod. XV 24, 1, in 367 = 387 there were six tribunes in office, though only the latter names Manlius, and following the ms. of Patmos he is given the praenomen Αῦλος, or Λεύκιος, or no praenomen; in 369 = 386 there were six according to Liv. 11, 1, but only four according to Diod. 28, 1, the former gives more names than the latter, and the former gives A. Manlius. <20> In the following year 370 = 384, Liv. 20, 2 reports a trial of M. Manlius Capitolinus, and says that even his brothers A. and T. abandoned the charged man, which was, of course, a later addition to tradition. The third consular tribunate of Manlius falls in 371 = 383; here, Liv. 21, 1 explicitly gives the number: A. Manlio tertium, whereas Diod. 38, 1 probably only accidentally gives the different praenomen Λεύκιος Μάλλιος (ms. of Patmos) or none at all. <30> The next time that either author mentions a tribune A. Manlius is under the year 384 = 370 (Liv. 36, 3. Diod. 76, 1), who could hardly have been anyone else. The fact that they both agree on the name of Manlius in the years 371 = 383 and 384 = 370 is all the more remarkable, since in both places Diod. only names four tribunes, while Livy names six. <40>
