Ap. Claudius Pulcher 299

vol. III p.2854-2855

299) Ap. Claudius Pulcher

The full brother of the previous Claudius, he was probably first to bear the same first name as him after he was adopted by his uncle (nr. 297). Before this, he was perhaps called C. If indeed the name of his adoptive father hasn't been mistakenly attributed to him, nor the name of the previous one's father attributed to that Claudius, then in order to differentiate between the two, <50> he would either have been called Appius minor or referred to by the cognomen Pulcher in place of the praenomen (cf. Mommsen Röm. Forsch. I 25, 37 and on CIL I 619). He raised the charge against Milo in 702 = 52 with his brother (see there); in the following year, he demanded the money back from M. Servilius which M. had once been bribed with by his father C. Claudius, but in doing so he only showed himself to be selfish and awkward. He passed up on a further charge against Servilius on account of extortion for the benefit of Q. Pilius, <60> after which he himself was charged by Servilius' relatives de repetundis and by Sex. Tettius de vi (Cael. ad fam. VIII 8, 2f.). Later, he was in Greece with his brother, where he enjoyed the teachings of Antonius Gnipho with him (Suet. gramm. 10). [from suppl. I p. 320: The brothers were not students of Antonius Gnipho in Greece, but instead they were students of L. Ateius Praetextatus, who accompanied them on their travels in the east (Suet. gramm. 10, see also vol. II p. 1910 nr. 11). [Münzer]] They also completed the reconstruction of the small propylaea in Eleusis as an executor of his uncle and adoptive father (CIL I 619 = III 547, cf. nr. 297). <page break 2854/2855> Later, it seems that he is no longer mentioned; at the very least, when people have tried to identify him with others, their conclusions remain uncertain (see nr. 14).
