Caecilia Metella 135

vol. III p.1235

135) Caecilia Metella

Daughter of Metellus Baliaricus nr. 82 and sister of Metellus Nepos nr. 95 [in the original text, these numbers are the wrong way around] (Cic. div. I 4; Rosc. Am. 147, which the information in the mss. ibid. 27 should be altered in accordance with). A dream she had in the year 664 = 99 prompted the senate to set up the cult of Iuno Sospita again (Cic. div. I 4. 99. Obsequ. 55). In 674 = 80, she took in Sex. Roscius into her house in Rome, whose father she and her family had stood in friendly relations with, <40> and granted him protection and help. She was married to the consul of 675 = 79 Ap. Claudius Pulcher, since his two sons Ap. Claudius Pulcher and P. Clodius, the infamous demagogue, as well as the two sons of the older Metellus Nepos, Celer and Nepos, are often referred to as fratres, ie siblings (eg. Appius, Clodius, Nepos Cic. ad Att. IV 3, 4. Clodius and Nepos Cic. de domo 7; fam. V 3, 1. Clodius and Celer Cic. har. resp. 45; Cael. 60, where patruelis should be glossed as frater).
