Ampsanctus (or Amsanctus)
A small lake in the land occupied by the Hirpini, between Aeclanum and Compsa, which produced poisonous gas; now le Mufite, between Rocca S. Felice and Villamagna. Next to it, there was a Sacellum to the Dea Mephitis with a cavern, <page break 1980/1981> which the suffocating air originated from (Plin. II 208), and for this reason, this location was linked with the myths of the underworld, like all other places of a similar kind. Verg. Aen. VII 563. Cic. de div. I 79. Claudian. rapt. Pros. II 350.
