321) Ap. Claudius Sabinus Inregillensis

According to the Fast Cap. to the year 303 = 451 M. f. (cf. nr. 24); <10> on his immigration, his original praenomen (different from all other reports Τῖτος Κλαύδιος in Dionys. V 40, 3) and nomen and his cognomina, see p.2663. The elogium of this first Appius (CIL I² p.199 nr. XXXI = VI 1279) describes him as q(uaestor) urb(anus), because it wanted to give him a cursus honorum, and at the time only the quaestorship existed along with the consulship. Appius took on this latter office in 259 = 495 with P. Servilius Priscus (Elog. Chronogr. Idat. Chron. pasch. Liv. II 21, 5. Cassiod. Dionys. VI 23, 1). <20> In the accounts in Livy (hence Val. Max. IX 3, 6) and Dionysios on this year, he already has all the traits that are characteristic of a stereotypical Claudius. The story of the first secessio gave a welcome opportunity to paint this picture in detail, and the shadows are made even stronger because, in contrast to Appius, his colleague is portrayed as being gentle and good to the plebs. <30> Anything connected to these stories has no historical value, eg. the story that in 260 = 494 Appius was almost elected dictator (Liv. II 29, 9. 30, 2. Dionys. VI 37, 2). Appius plays the same role of the enemy of the people in Dionys. again, even before his consulship in the year 258 = 496 (V 66, 1), then after the secession 261 = 493 (VI 59, 1), at the famine of 262 = 492 (VII 15, 3), <40> and at the trial of Coriolanus 263 = 491 (VII 47, 2, hence Plut. Coriol. 19, 3). Later, on the other hand, he appears as a middle-man between the two fighting factions, in Dionys. (VIII 63, 1ff. 75, 3) in 268 = 486 and in Livy (II 44, 2ff.) in 274 = 480. All these stories should be disregarded as pure fiction. On the accounts of Plin. n. h. XXXV 12, see below nr. 296.
