C. Claudius Pulcher 303
vol. III p.2856-2857
303) C. Claudius Pulcher
The second son of nr.296, he was a legate of Caesar in 696 = 58 (Cic. Sest. 41). In the year 697 = 57, Cicero speaks about P. Clodius as if he had been living in conflict with this brother - since it can't have been the other brother - and had been preparing demonstrations (de domo 118, cf. 26), but in the following year, when Claudius was praetor, he and Clodius prevented the legal tablet pertaining to Cicero's exile from being taken from the Capitoline together (Dio XXXIX 21, 28[?]). <60> In the year 699 = 55, he was in charge of the province of Asia (Inschriften von Pergamom II 409. Cistophoren von Ephesos, Pergamon, Tralles, Pinder Cistophoren 569f. CIL I 522); he wanted to put himself forward for the consulship for the following year and therefore transfer into the plebs, but he didn't want to leave the province and therefore stepped back from his campaign (Cic. Scaur.. 33ff. Ascon. on that 22f. Schol. Bob. p.374 Or., cf. Mommsen Röm. Forsch. I 125; in Cic. ad Att. IV 15, 2 it's better to read rhetor Clodius [cf. Clodius] than praetor Clodius). <page break 2856/2857> After his return, he was charged by M. Servilius and was probably found guilty, despite bribing the prosecution; he seems to have been in exile in the year 702 = 52 and for a long time following, perhaps even during 711 = 43 (Cael. ad fam. VIII 8, 2. Cic. ad fam. XI 22, 1. Ascon. Milon. p. 29, cf. Mommsen CIL I1 p.182 note.). <10>
