M. Caecilius Metellus 80

vol. III p.1206

80) M. Caecilius Metellus

Dubious manuscript tradition has lead to two people with this name becoming mixed up: a) M. Metellus, one of Catiline's companions who welcomed him in when Catiline was spending his final time in Rome (Cic. Cat. I 19). Dio XXXVII 32, 2 says the same of the praetor Q. Metellus Celer (nr. 86), and since this creates a contradiction with Cicero (loc. cit.), <40> people assume that he has confused the two Metelli with each other. However, most scholars read M. Marcellus in Cicero (cf. the error the other way around in nr. 96, below p. 1217, 58). b) M. Metellus, often turning up as tribune of the plebs 699 = 55 and as an opponent of the triumvirs, and taken as the father of nr. 88. These accounts are based on Flor. I 46, 3, though there it is better to read Ateius instead of M. Metellus.
