M. Saufeius 6
vol. II A p.257
6) M. Saufeius M. f.
As Milo's most heavily charged accomplice for the murder of P. Clodius 702 = 52, he was brought before the courts twice, and both times - despite all the evidence against him - he was acquitted (Ascon. Mil. 28. 48f. Kiessl. = 31, 9, 45, 26ff. Stangl). Cicero was part of his defence, as well as M. Caelius Rufus, and the following inscription CIL XIV 2624 comes from Caelius' homeland Tusculum (see vol. III p.1267, 3ff.): <30> Caelia P. f. municipio suo | donum dedit imaginem | L. Saufei | Ap. f: ex sé nátei, which implies a family connection between the Saufeii from Praenteste and the Caelii from Tusculum; cf. p.256.
