5) Cleon

A Cilician, from near Taurus. He had been used to a life of robbery since he was young, and didn’t stop when he and and brother Komanos (see there) were enslaved and ended up among the half-wild enslaved shepherds of Sicily. Around 618 = 136, he gathered together a band of escaped slaves, and took over Agrigentum. <60> People kept flooding in to join him, and he combined his forces with those under Eunus who had revolted in the east and in the middle of the island. Cleon subordinated himself underneath Eunus, who had become king, though remained one of the most eminent leaders of the slaves, and met his death while fighting valiently to try to break through the siege of Henna in 622 = 132 (Diod. XXXIV 2, 17. 20f. 43. Liv. ep. LVI. Val. Max. IX 12 ext. 1; cf. vol. VI p.1144f.). <page break 717/718>
