305) P. Claudius Pulcher
The second son of nr. 293, he was curule aedile in 565 = 189 (Liv. XXXVIII 35, 5; on Plin. n. h. XXI 6 cf. nr. 302), <40> he was without doubt praetor in 567 = 197 (cf. nr. 294), and put himself forward for the consulship in 596 = 185 for the next year. Thanks to powerful support from his brother Appius (nr. 294), who was consul at the time, he was elected successfully against expectations (Elog. XXII CIL I2 p. 200 = VI 31586. Liv. XXXIX 32, 5. 10-13. 33, 1. 52, 4f. Cic. Brut. 60. Fasti Cap. Chronogr. Idat. Chron. pasch. Cassiod.). <50> Together with his colleague, he received Liguria as a province; they didn't win any noteworthy successes (Liv. XXXIX 38, 1. 44, 11. 45, 3). In an unspecified year before becoming consul, Claudius had strengthened the colony Cales with new colonists (Elog.); after he was consul, he lead colonists to Graviscae in Etruria as triumvir in 573 = 181 (Elog. Liv. XL 29, 2). The Nolan inscription CIL X 1250 known from an old copy may refer to him: P. Claudio Pulcro cos. patrono. <60>
