Bakcheus

Bakcheus (Βακχεύς)

Another form of Bakchos, sometimes used as a self-standing name, sometimes as an epithet of Dionysos, Soph. Antig. 1121. Eurip. Bakch. 145; Ion 218. Orph. Hymn. 45, 2. 52, 1. Hymn. in Attin (Bergk Poet. lyr. gr. III4 685. 687). Anthol. Plan. 156, 3. Bakcheus is attested as an epiclesis of Dionysus in Naxos (Athen. III 78 c), in Erythrai (Dittenberger Syll. 370, 147 = Rev. arch. XXXIV 107) and on Mykonos (Dittenberger Syll. 373, 27 = Bull. hell. XII 460; cf. Preller Griech. Myth.4 I 665, 1). <30> In Aeschyl. frg. 341, Apollo is given the epithet Bakcheus, probably because of the close relationship between Apollo and Dionysos in the Delphic cult, see vol. II p.35. F. A. Voigt in Roschers Lexikon I 1033.
