261) Aurelia Orestilla

Catilina captus amore Aureliae Orestillae, cuius praeter formam nihil unquam bonus laudavit, quod ea nubere illi dubitabat timens privignum adulta aetate, pro certo creditur necato filio vacuam domum scelestis nuptiis fecissi, Sall. Cat. 15, 2 (from which Val. Max. IX 1, 9). <30> This is the same rumour as δόξας ποτὲ καὶ υἱὸν ἀνελεῖν κτλ. Appian. b. c. II 2. Cicero references this in Cat. I 14 cum morte superioris uxoris novis nuptiis domum vacuefecisses, nonne etiam alio incredibili scelere hoc scelus cumulasti? When Catiline left Rome, he left Aurelia to the care of Q. Catulus, Sall. Cat. 35, 6. From her first marriage (as can be concluded from Sall. Cat. 35, 3 suis filiaeque copiis persolveret), she had a daughter, whom she betrothed to the young (Q.) Cornificius in 704 = 50, Caelius in Cic. ad fam. VIII 7, 2. Cicero may also have had her in mind when he names some Aurelia as an example in ad fam. IX 22, 4, but this is uncertain.
