The City of Kairouan was once a grand city, of great importance to the lands of Tunisia. The city was founded by a great Arab warrior Uqba ibn Nafi in 670, as Arabic tribes and Armies searched for a new place to set up a defensive position. A fort was swiftly created, and the armies then continued on their conquest westward to claim North Africa in the name of Allah. The city was the victim of countless Berber raids during its existence, as the defending armies constantly left to conquer new lands.
When the Zirids declared their conversion to Sunni Islam and independence from Cairo, the city was under their control. The entire area that the High Chiefdom controls now, in fact, was under the control of the Zirids. A war broke out between Cairo and the Zirids, and Kairouan was subsequently captured and destroyed, so its importance would be insignificant to the region of Tunisia for decades to come.
But, during the siege of Kairouan by the armies of Cairo, a peculiar figure was fighting alongside the invaders. The House of al-Husam, founded out of thin air and of great respect of the Tunisian tribes, participated in the siege for gold and glory. A man, Kabir al-Husam, was leading the armies which carried the banner of Allah - A green field, with Allah's name written upon it. They viewed the city become not, and after it was said and done, the House of al-Husam stayed behind. Ruling over a destroyed city, al-Husam became synonymous with warfare and power - A dreadful house, for a dreadful past.
As Kabir and his armies rode through the drylands and deserts of Tunisia, Kairouan began to gain a different name - The home of the Arabic tribes of Tunisia, and the center of all Maghrebi culture - The same culture its new leader, Kabir, was a part of. The banner of Allah was raised throughout all of Tunisia as another conquest ensued, and the people of Tunisia were given a choice: To follow Kairouan, or to perish under His sword. The answer was clear, and yet, another "King" was still refusing to submit in the east..
