The fall of Andalusia
The collapse of the Almohad Caliphate in the 13th century fractured Iberia and the Maghreb into a multitude of warring states. This period of chaos was a perfect opportunity for the Christian Kingdoms to wage their war of 'Reconquista', resulting in the annexation of all the Muslim states of Iberia with the sole exception of the Emirate of Granada.
The Hasfid dynasty that rules Tunis were once governors in the service of the Almohads. When the Caliphate collapsed they continued to rule in Tunis and have even awarded themselves the title of Caliph, through the Muslim world at large pays little heed to this bold claim. Of the three large kingdoms on the coast, Tunis is the least beset by internal struggle and is relatively free to make incursions on the surrounding states.

The Kasbah of Tunis
Our lands might not be as fertile as the Europeans, but our people are proud and populous. We produce high quality trade goods that they want to buy. Exotic goods from India and China can be found in our markets. It might take longer for us to develop and built up our nation, but the reward will be great, our lands are prosperous and our people loyal. Our holy city of Kairouan is a center of knowledge. Patience.
Opium, tea, coffee and music
The daily life in Tunis is peaceful. It is normal for men in public houses to drink coffee and smoke opium. Tea is very popular in Tunis, but it is very expensive. It is during these meetings that stories are shared and deals made.
Opium never became popular in Christians nations as the Catholics quickly deemed it an unholy drug introduced by the devil.
The introduction of Tobacco and the waterpibe
In the Indian city of Fatehpur Sikri, Roman Catholic missionaries of the Society of Jesus arriving from the southern part of the country introduced tobacco to the Mughal emperor Akbar the Great (1542–1605 AD). Louis Rousselet writes that the physician of Akbar, Hakim Aboul Futteh Ghilani, then invented the hookah in India. However, a quatrain of Ahlī Shirazi (d. 1535), a Persian poet, refers to the use of the ḡalyān (Falsafī, II, p. 277; Semsār, 1963, p. 15), thus dating its use at least as early as the time of the Shah Ṭahmāsp I. It seems, therefore, that Abu’l-Fath Gilani should be credited with the introduction of the ḡalyān, already in use in Persia, into India.[51] There is, however, no evidence of the existence of the water pipe until the 1560s. Moreover, tobacco is believed to have arrived in India in the 17th century, until then cannabis was smoked in India, so that suggests another substance was probably smoked in Ahlī Shirazi's quatrain, perhaps through some other method.
Tobacco has not yet been discovered by the Tunisian's, but it will be popular one day!
Your position is stable and your only threat is Aragon, a nation occupied by internal struggle and the instability of Naples.
The diplomatic doors are open for both Europeans and the Middle East, unlike Morocco, we are in the middle of the diplomatic scene of the Mediterranean Sea.
We once ruled Sicily. If our navy becomes strong enough, we might be able to dominate the islands once more!
You are in a stable position to built up your nation, be careful with being to hasty.
Your secure position makes you an ideal friend to lend out mercenaries. There must be someone who needs a few soldiers.
There is lots of mountains and highlands in Tunis, many with low income goods such as wool and grain. Maybe it would make sense to build mines and look for precious metals?
Where is the future of Tunis? The lands are open to you in all directions. You might not be the strongest, but your safe position allows you to play the diplomatic game on your terms. Patience and planning is our strongest weapon.
