On 1 September 1969, a group of military officers led by Muammar Gaddafi staged a coup against King Idris who led the ruling Muslim order.
After the Libyian Revolution Gaddafi quickly took control of the country and 4 years later announced the Five Point Address where Sharia law was introduced. The Five Point Address outlawed Gaddafi's opposition with the death penalty. He soon formed people's militias and recruited ~15% of the population into the Revolutionary Committees, both worked to strengthen Gaddafi's hold on power, this period which lasted until 1977 is called the Libyan Cultural Revolution.
In 1977, Libya was renamed to the "Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya". Gaddafi officially reliquished his power to the General People's Committees but he still practically held totalitarian control. The new "jamahiriya" system he established was a form of direct democracy however its authenticity was doubted and election results were not published.
After the cultural revolution in 1977 Libya and Egypt fought a 4 day border war. And In 1978, Libya's support of rebel forces in northern Chad escalated into an invasion which lasted 9 years. Much of Libya's oil revenue was spent on arms and on sponsoring dozens of rebel groups around the world. Libya was finally put under United Nations sanctions after 3 international aircraft bombings in 1992.
Under Gaddafi 1977 average income rose to $11,000, the fifth-highest in Africa, while Libya's ranking on the Human Development Index became the highest in Africa and many in the middle east. This was done without any foreign loans. The country's literacy rate too jumped from 10% to 90%, life expectancy from 57 to 77 years and welfare systems were introduced that allowed access to free education, free healthcare, and financial assistance for housing.
