The Succession: In the past, the throne of Skyrim has gone to the progeny of the old king, but when he has none or they are not legitimate, the Moot is held to determine a new one. In the recent succession, the old King had a daughter but it was suggested by King Savartr that she was a bastard and should not have the right to inherit. He declared a moot in Solitude which was attended by many leaders and Jarl's, most of whom declared for him, the moot itself giving him some legitimacy. In the East, Freydis the daughter of the old High King was chosen by the Crown of Verity, whose magic would select the worthy heir. This gave her considerable legitimacy, which resulted in a fair number more swearing fealty to her over Savartr. For those currently already on one side or those still neutral, there is a split that is hard to determine. Both have a valid cause to rule, and deciding to declare for one or none at all is a gray area at best.
It could well be that at the end of things, Skyrim will remain split in two, the destruction of the true High Kingship becoming no longer needed. Yet even so, it is likely true Nords will demand that the land be united once more. Long ago, the Nordic Empire spread out far beyond this realm, and that will never be forgotten.
The Moot: When the High King of Skyrim dies with no legitimate heir it is the duty of his vassals to determine a worthy leader. The crown of Verity will point the way yet it is becoming increasingly more important for the Moot to decide if that way is to be taken. Therefore every High King must maintain good relationships with his people to ensure his line continues. Outright rejecting his legitimate children would be extreme but not entirely impossible.
Nordic Empire: In ancient times the first Empire to ever appear was in Skyrim. The ancestors of the Nords formed a great polity which after its conquests of the original inhabitants brought much of its borderland under its banner and was defining militarily. A succession much like the current one broke its power and cast the people of Skyrim down to a more humble place. There are lessons to be learned here, as well as inspiration for what we could yet achieve.
Crown Of Verity: After the loss of the Jagged Crown the Crown of Verity was created by mages, embued with magical power to choose only the worthy to rule over Skyrim. Those of poor morals and lacking strength will be outright rejected, the crown itself unwilling to sit upon the head of they who would take it. This is not a defining thing however, and it is possible to ignore it or destroy the thing symbolocially though this has certainly never been done.
What is my role in this?: There are a number of characters to play in this story. You will pick on to play and through their traits, history, and story weave yourself into the fabric of this game. Remember, the greatest stories are often not those of kings but rather, the few who manage to define the paths of their people without holding great power. No matter what level you sit on CK3 provides you much you can do without holding great power. Do not let your preconceptions of the game and its mechanics stop you from doing anything you can imagine within reason.
