Bahrain became independent from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1971, despite the Shah of Iran pressing intense claim on the land. Because of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, Bahraini Shiites instigated a failed coup in the country, which would have installed an exiled Shiite as the supreme leader of the nation. In 1994, Bahrainis threw stones at runners of a marathon for being bare legged, something against the Bahraini Islamic faith. The result was a violent clash between civilians and police. In 1999, women were granted the right to vote, and all political prisoners were released and the keeping of political prisoners seemingly outlawed.
Bahrain is incredibly pro-American, being, like the UAE, a very liberalized state for one which practices Islam.
Bahrain’s government is a constitutional monarchy headed by King Al Khalifa, and the king can appoint both the prime minister and all of his ministers. The Bahrainis also have a bicameral national assembly, consisting of the Shura Council and the Council of Representatives, the former being appointed by the king, and the latter being selected by absolute majority vote.
Bahrain is 47% Bahraini, with the rest being foreigners who are employed by oil and other companies in Bahrain, mostly from South Asia. Much like other Arab nations, these foreign employees are underpaid and overworked, making for an issue in Bahrain.
In summary, Bahrain is a semi-pro-American Arab state, majority Muslim, and nearly majority Bahraini. The Bahraini Dinar is the second highest valued currency in the world, only behind the Kuwaiti Dinar. Bahrain has a very powerful economy for Middle Eastern standards, and is a large financial center for the world. The fate of Bahrain, and whether it can overtake the Kuwaitis in currency, is only up to the player, though, and perhaps the memory of 1979 will be revived.
