The fall of Andalusia
The Kingdom of Sweden entered the Kalmar Union with Norway and Denmark willingly in 1397, eager to limit the influence of the German merchants of the Hanseatic League. The union has however in many ways proved to be a disappointment to the Swedish nobles. Authority has become centered in faraway Denmark, and the many conflicts with Lübeck and the Hanseatic cities have been quite costly. Many are weary of their hard-earned money being spent on Danish adventures in Northern Germany, wars that also disrupt trade and hinder the export of Swedish iron.
Tensions reached an all time high in the 1430's with the popular Engelbrekt rebellion forcibly ejecting Danish officials from the country. An uprising that together with failed wars against the Hanseatic League led to the deposition of the Union King Erik, who has fled to the island of Gotland, leading a life as a local pirate rather than the king of the north.
The new king elected by Danes, Swedes and Norwegians is a foreigner with no local power base, Christopher von Wittelsbach, but the real power in the kingdom of Sweden lies with the Lord High Justiciar of Sweden, Karl Knutsson Bonde, and the Swedish nobility.
Time will make it clear if the Union of Kalmar can be mended, or if Sweden will walk its own way. What is clear is that the control over the Baltic Sea and its many estuaries and ports will be imperative to the Swedish Kingdom. The sea routes are what binds the large Swedish kingdom together, from Kalmar to Viborg, and that is also how the bountiful Swedish iron and copper reach the continent.
You begin the game in 1444 as a loyal union under Denmark. However, the Danes are obsessed with the expensive wars against the Hansa and their ambitions across Europe. The situs requirement for Sweden is a bit undefined, because you start as a loyal subject, but the more the Danes do that requires Sweden soldiers and/or gold that does not benefit Sweden directly, that should make your population grow in disloyalty greatly. Of course, this does not mean that you are instantly rebellious at the first stance Denmark takes to expand their own power. But you are not loyal for free either. These instances should build up conflict between Denmark and Sweden.
You are not allowed to declare a war for independence without proper RP conflict built up.
You are welcome to allow foreign nations to influence you diplomatically, but remember, if your goal is to be independent, then your goal is not to ruin Denmark or Norway in the process.
You might be playing as a union and subject, but you should still develop the narrative and story in Sweden. What is the goal and ambitions of the different powerful factions? You have lots of options both in the game and in the RP besides becoming independent.
Unless the Catholic Church does an extra job to shepherd Scandinavia and stop focusing only on affairs in middle and southern Europe, then the factions in Sweden find the things from the reformation very appealing. This point is not to force you to pick reformed or protestant, but to remind the player that Scandinavia is not well represented in the Catholic Church and finds reforming it appealing.
Absolutism was very appealing to the Swedes historically. The Age of Absolutism spawns 10 years after Global Trade in 1600. It is high encouraged to go down this historical path of absolutism. It could be as follows:
If you are still a subject by this time, the factions within Sweden demand absolute power to the throne. If the Danish King doesn’t maximize his absolutism and rapidly focuses on becoming a world great power that sets the stage, then you could rebel and seek independence and put the task of Scandinavian Absolutism and world dominance as your primary focus. Historically, the period of Sweden's status as a world great power with their military supremacy was from 1611 to 1721.
