The Trade Center on the door to the Rhine
The Low Countries are a fragmented collection of territories on the edge of the Holy Roman Empire, having only recently been partially unified under the expanding reach of Phillip the Good, The Duke of Burgundy. Some realms such as Gelre and Utrecht remain free of the French Burgundians and enjoy the protection of the Emperor. The Low Countries under Burgundian rule are Flanders, Brabant and Holland, the wealthiest and their trade plays a key role in the influence between the larger nations of England, France, The Kalmar Union and the Mighty Empire. The French rule the Low Countries from the Duchy of Burgundy, half of their realm under the French Crown and the other half under Imperial law. The House of Burgundy has grown into one of the wealthiest families in Europe by playing off the French and English against each other. What future would bestow the country of Holland if they play the mighty nations against the Burgundians? Or should they remain loyal?
The Wealth of the Low Countries
The Rhine River plays an extremely important role for many nations for trade, travel and protection. Controlling the river crossings, the cities along it and its entrance is power and wealth. The entrances to the Rhine is Rotterdam and Amsterdam, the two major port cities in the Duchy of Holland.
Having enjoyed the protection of the Emperor and now the Duke of Burgundy, Holland lies in a safe position as an egg in a shell, being able to focus on itself.
