What is Infernum Aeternum?
Infernum Aeternum is Latin for 'Hell is eternal', which sums up the theme of this alternative history mod. Europe is in a way worse condition than Vanilla EU4. Religious differences are at an all time high, while civil wars and internal struggles have torn apart major nations and crumbled every empire. Genocide, raiding and backstabbing have become everyday life for not just the peasantry, but the aristocrats in their palaces too. Everyone is not enjoying the lovely conditions of living in hell. This scenario will not offer easy solutions, a future of bloodshed, betrayal and death awaits. There will only be one ruler who can become victorious and they will rule everyone from the fiery pits of Hell.
What is different?
There are major differences between vanilla EU4 and Infernum Aeternum. In the normal EU4 timeline, each region has one or two dominant powers with several smaller nations surrounding them, which is not very balanced. Of course sometimes it happens that Albania defeats the Ottomans and Byzantium survives. Sometimes even Granada manages to win in Iberia. Other times, some small OPM inherits all of Burgundy. But those are just rare examples of the underling winning against the usual odds.
Inferum Aeternum is different in this regard - almost every region is broken up into smaller nations and while some are larger than others, every country has it's own struggles to deal with and every experience is very different. No region has a defined dominant nation. But every region has several smaller nations which could become a regional powerhouse in due time.
The timeline of Infernum Aeternum
This scenario is not for you IF:
You dislike religious roleplay. This scenario will be packed to the brim with different religions from Jewish Kingdoms and Norse Pagans to Hussites, Cathars and many others besides the usual ones.
You don't want to play your background. Every nation will be given a background with some lore and their new history in this timeline, with notes about their current situation. This MUST be respected, it is strictly against the scenario rules to define your own starting situation. Once the game runs and things start to happen, the world opens and you will be able to diverge from the original path. Some nations will be railroaded and 'forced' to go into a certain direction, maybe even for the entire campaign. Just like a normal Papal States player would always play out their unique role.
You want to colonize early. This scenario is focused on European drama and will be changed to have harder colonization, which will start a century or so later than usual. There will be tons of conflict from the start, so only a few nations can even afford to focus on the New World. Some nations will have formables that will lead them from their unstable beginner situation to a more "modern" nation, some of these formables will have colonization paths. Example is Portucale: focusing on winning the Reconquista at first and then, once Iberia is safe from the Islamic Cordoba, they can form Portugal and start colonizing.
If you are a sore loser. I will put it bluntly - lots of nations in this scenario will get declared on and some of them will die. This does not make it a competetive scenario, as its focus is entirely roleplay. But nations like Castile and Granada will fight to the death. There are tons of exciting and epic roleplay opportunities when your nation is collapsing. Embrace it and make your death glorious. If you don't want to play in a scenario where players potentially will lie and backstab you in a way leading to your collapse, then many of the nations in this scenario are not for you. Some nations will be marked as PVP nations and they will be in deadly situations from the start. An example is England - they should expect to be declared on by both French Duchies and their Northern enemies, waiting for England's moment of weakness to strike.
We have spent a lot of time and love in creating this scenario for the community. We expect you to respect the rules and Game Controllers that are here to guide us during gameplay. We expect you to respect their decisions. If you have no desire to respect the scenario or the Game Controllers and just want to be a rebel, then expect to be treated as one.
Nations to play
Priority:
Every nation will have a priority number next to them on their page. They range from 1 to 4.
P1: Nations that are key participants in the scenario, highly flavored with content and should be filled by players.
P2: Nations with lots of flavor and significant impact on the scenario, highly advised to have players on them.
P3: Medium amount of flavor and their missions have less impact on the scenario, but they are capable of becoming important if the player comes up with influential roleplay.
P4: All other nations, possible left the same as vanilla EU4.
Current relationships and stars:
Almost every priority nation will begin with some ‘current relationships’, which may include alliances, rivalries, trade deals, subjects and so on. These relationships will be given 1-3 stars depending on how important they are, with three indicating most important ones. Maybe you as a player might see a royal marriage with another nation as insignificant use of diplo slot, but it might be important to your nation. Maybe it secured an important treaty which guaranteed peace or one of the nation's cultures sees the marriage as important to their current situation. These relationships are not just something we picked at random - it is the starting roleplaying situation your nation is in at the game start, and can not be easily reversed, like a rivalry between England and France in vanilla EU4.
PvP Nations: Some nations are marker as PvP nations. This means that other nations have missions and backgrounds that will lead them towards warfare against you , potentially deciding whether your nations gets to survive or not. These nations are an interesting choice for those who want a playstyle of either glorious victory or utter destruction. Players who sign up for these nations should be prepared for warfare and prepared to lose. Expect that several wars will be declared on you at the same time, your friends will backstab you and your nation will have a hard time. Players who sign up for these nations should therefore not become crybabies or ragequit when you lose some territory in a war.
During the campaign several PvP nations meet their destiny and either become Great Powers or die. Those that die will be in a perfect position to switch to another nation and continue in the same campaign. Remember, this is not a short campaign and there will be lots of epic roleplay to look forward to - usually our games last well into 18th century and even someimtes until end date of EU4.
