In the idyllic countryside of Toulon, France, the House de Roussillon thrived amidst their flourishing vineyard and the vibrant red fields of flowers that surrounded it. For generations, they cultivated their prized grapes, producing exquisite wines renowned for their rich flavors and distinct character. The family's Coat of Arms bore a striking red rose, symbolizing the beauty and passion that adorned their land, while the wings depicted the seagulls that gracefully soared above the vineyard, occasionally gracing the estate with their presence.
However, in the year 1052, tragedy struck the House de Roussillon. Pierre de Roussillon, the head of the family, was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his second child, anticipating the expansion of their lineage and the joy that a growing family brings. Sadly, both his wife and the child perished during a complicated childbirth, plunging Pierre into a profound state of grief.
Overwhelmed by his sorrow and seeking solace from the memories that haunted his once-happy home, Pierre made a fateful decision. He resolved to sell the vineyard, relinquishing the ties to the past that pained him deeply. With the proceeds from the sale, he acquired a ship and set sail into the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea, accompanied only by his four-year-old son, Louis.
Their voyage led them eastward, navigating treacherous waters and encountering various lands along their path. Eventually, in the enchanting realm of Cyprus, they encountered local nobles who regaled them with tales of a primitive civilization residing to the north of Anatolia. Intrigued by the possibilities of uncharted lands and the opportunity to establish a new legacy, Pierre and young Louis set their sights on this mysterious realm.
Using the remaining funds from the vineyard, Pierre embarked on a daring endeavor. He purchased a mercenary company, assembling a formidable force to safeguard their journey into the unknown. Braving the unpredictable seas, they sailed north, determined to carve out a new domain for the House de Roussillon.
In the year 1064, tragedy once again struck the family when Pierre, burdened by the weight of his responsibilities and the perils of their conquest, succumbed to the relentless passage of time, leaving his fourteen-year-old son, Louis, to shoulder the weight of their newfound lands alone. Tasked with governing the sprawling territories of their nascent Chiefdom of Oleshye, Louis quickly realized the importance of forging alliances and securing his people's safety.
In this unfamiliar territory, Louis faced a stark reality. To survive amidst the untamed wilderness and rival factions, he had to bow before the Cumans, an indigenous nomadic tribe renowned for their martial prowess. Though it was a difficult decision, bending the knee to the Cumans proved crucial for the survival and stability of the Chiefdom of Oleshye.
