One of the three daughters of Cronus and Rhea, Demeter is an exceptionally powerful but often overlooked Goddess. One of the Dodekatheon, Demeter has before held the entire world hostage, preventing anything to grow, when her daughter Persephone was carried away into the Underworld by her brother Hades. In this crisis, even mighty Zeus had to reneg on the deal he made with Hades in return for Demeter returning the world to its green and growing state, if only for a time. The Goddess does not have a strong relationship with her brothers, however, as she has suffered many cruelties at their hands. Poseidon raped her after Demeter fled from him in the guise of a horse, Zeus gave away their daughter Persephone, and Hades keeps Persephone away for half the year.

Demeter is also the patron of a Mystery cult, the Eleusinian Mysteries. The details lost to time, and the fact it was supposed to be a mystery, her adherents walked along a specific pilgrimage route, washed a piglet in the sea, and then sacrifice it in a closed ceremony. There is also a suspicion that her cultists consumed a drink of water and powdered barley. This powdered barley drink is suspected to have hallucinogenic fungus or spores which explains the esoteric nature of the cult.

Interestingly, members of her cult receive some sort of beneficial treatment in the afterlife... maybe some sort of deal was reached with Hades over Persephone?
