The Goddess of the Night fills an interesting spot in the darkness fearing Egyptians. Nephthys manages to continue this theme by, while being the Goddess of night, protecting those who must wander through the darkness from the things that may lurk unseen. She is also a patron of the dead, as her sister is a patron of the living, and cares for them, protecting them in their travels through the depths of the underworld on their way to Osiris.

She once disguised herself as her sister, hoping that her husband Set would be more interested in their sister and that he would be able to impregnate her if he was more attracted to her. But, Osiris saw Nephthys, and believing her to be his wife took her away, despite her protests that she was not his wife. This has lead to Anubis, the child that was born later, to have an unknown true parentage, either one of Set or one of Osiris' children.
