The Goddess of both salt and fresh water, Chalchiuhtlicue represents both sides of the element that lies within her Purview. As the sea, she is wild, and as the fresh water lakes, and rivers of the land, she is calm and brings life to all those around. She is a patron of childbirth, watching over newly born children, and their mothers. She is the second wife of Tlaloc, and just as her husband share control of water, she assists him in his bringing of the rains.

Once, long ago, the Goddess was the Sun of The Fourth World shining brilliantly down on the people and Gods, cheering them and bringing joy to their lives. Though, Tezcatlipoca did not like the way in which The Fourth World functioned, and tormented the Goddess, whispering to her in the darkness that she had no true desire to help the people of the world in her duty as the sun, and only did it to selfishly make them love her. In grief, she cried a torrent of blood, flooding the world and destroying it accidentally after the fifty second consecutive year of crying.
