God of the fertility of the land, Oko has the common physical attributes of a male fertility God, though he has the difference of being entirely celibate, for he is bound to the fertility of the land, and if he were to marry or have intercourse with anyone, the land would suffer greatly. Once Oko contracted leprosy, and he had to leave his community for the forest. He discovered that if he ate a fruit, and then planted the seeds, more plants would grow, discovering agriculture, and healing himself with herbs he grew.

He was once married to Olokun, having been taken by her beauty, for she had taken the form of a beautiful woman at the time, but had to vow never to speak of her deformed legs. Oko farmed and lived by the seashore during this time, though once he grew drunk on palm wine, and spoke of his wife's secret, and she left him, furious, and causing sea and earth to forever be divided.
