Retainers are those who have been swept into the fate of the Scion, gaining their own legend score from the momentum of your story. This legend score is always one point less than the Scion they serve. Any given retainer can be a single person, a few people, or an entire group who operate as a single effective unit. Great examples of a retainer might be an extremely skilled butler, two hulking minotaurs, a group of flying horses, a full squad of loyal Einherjar, or an entire flock of flesh eating ravens. Retainers start by choosing two abilities that thematically fit the role the player wishes them to serve. Use the ‘skilled’ dice pool listed below whenever they roll one of these chosen abilities, and the ‘unskilled’ dice pool on all other rolls. When it is mechanically necessary, they count as having attributes equal to their ‘unskilled’ dice pool. A retainer acts on the same initiative as the Scion they serve, and regardless of how many people make up a retainer, they always share a single health, willpower, and legend pool.
Retainers can also become associated with Epic Attributes or Purviews. These are always at the maximum value for the legend score of the retainer (which is always one less than your own). Unlike a Scion, they only gain a single free knack or boon from each associated Epic Attribute or Purview while your character is a Hero, two from each when your character becomes a Demigod, and three from each when your character becomes a God.
Advancement
When buying dots of Retainer, you may always choose to take a Perk instead of gaining an Epic or Purview. So it is possible for a single retainer to have up to eight perks. Retainers may be raised to a maximum of 5 at Hero, 8 at Demigod, and 11 at God. Whenever a character goes up in permanent legend, she may replace any knacks and boons her retainer knows with new ones, to represent the retainer growing in power along with her. She must still meet the prerequisites of anything she chooses.
Example Perks
Gain two more Abilities you wish to be skilled at.
Gain two more Knacks or Boons you meet the prerequisites for.
Gain a special ability such as Flight, Increased Soak, Resurrection, or some other natural or supernatural ability unique to your retainer. The storyteller will determine the specific mechanical benefits of this special ability.
Example Retainers
Here is a link to a few retainers that we have used in our own games. Feel free to mine them for ideas in your own games.
Potential Retainers
As presented, here is a list of potential retainers that one could use in their own game, either for use by PCs or as NPCs, sorted by Pantheon. Of course, this does not mean that an Irish Scion could never receive an Egyptian retainer, for there could be countless reasons for such a thing to happen, they are just sorted in this order so that navigation can be simplified. The exact stats of these Retainers are not given, and are, at their core, just a fleshed out idea that a Player or Storyteller could give stats to, changing them so that they fit into any setting or tailored to fit with any Scion.
Dwarven Assistants - A pair of Dwarves who travel with the Scion who they have been bound to. They are greedy, and lustful, traits that run in the Legend of their kin, but the deal made with the Scion's Divine Parent in return for working under their Scion as a pair of forge assistants will make them rich enough to buy and sell all the other Dwarves in the Nine Worlds twice over. They are not great warriors, but are skilled assistants to the Scion's metalworking.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion and could be improved over time by making them more skilled, and improving their artistry.
Kraken - A colossal creature of the deep, a Nemean Giant Squid, the Vanir God Njord gave the Kraken to the Scion as a gift. It is bestial, not intelligent in the slightest, and unable to communicate normally with the Scion, though a simple investment in the Animal Purview could allow communication. The beast is limited to areas filled with water, though with its Epic Stamina it could likely survive on the surface for an extremely long period of time. The Kracken's dark nature does need to be curbed slightly by the Scion though, for if it is left to its own devices long enough, it will likely attempt to drag some ships into the deep.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Demigod Scion, and could be improved over time by making it stronger, more durable, and gain mastery over the water.
Einherjar - A troop of Norwegian Warriors who died at the Battle of Stamford Bridge and were collected by the Valkyries for their glorious battle. The slain warriors were released from either Valhalla or Folkvangr, depending on if Odin or Freya gifted them to the Scion, and serve them faithfully. They are confused by the modern world, having only a limited interaction with it through the more modern warriors who were swept up to the halls of Odin and Freya by the Valkyries, and have had a hard time adapting, sticking out like a sore thumb. But, they are brave, and powerful warriors, the gift of eternal battle still effecting them, appearing at the Scion's side every morning if they were slain.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and could be improved over time by having them grow more skilled in combat as time goes on.
Valkyrie - A single Valkyrie was sent to watch over the Scion by Freya. She is stern, and incredibly expecting of the Scion to live up to the values of the Norse. She has some problems fitting in with the modern world, but pays no heed to it, and if the Scion she has been bound to tries to shame her for doing something like trying to start a fight, or being that tenth century style homophobic and shouting across the street to mock two men for being 'womanly', is going to be met with nothing but strange looks and comments that the Scion should follow her example to fit in. She is a skilled warrior, but more importantly, can claim the souls of anyone who dies fighting bravely, vanishing for a time to carry the soul of the dead up to one of the two halls.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and can be improved over time by having her increase her skills in combat, and gain control over Death or Psychopomp.
Fire Drake Hatchling - The Dragon that Beowulf and Wiglaf slew together after Beowulf's Jarls ran from the beast was doing more than guarding its horde. There was a clutch of dragon eggs in the center of the horde, and they were kept by the Geats as the horde was taken by Wiglaf after he became king when Beowulf died. They were passed from king, to king, until one day they vanished. Some say they were stolen by a large red headed man, some say they went missing when an old traveler stayed in the longhouse of the King of the Geats for a night, and others say that they were just sold to someone who had a truly great amount of gold. Ten Centuries later, if not more depending on the date of the events on the story, the eggs hatched and one was given to a Scion of the Norse. It is the size of a dog, and bothersome greedy, trying to take every object with a hint of glitter and secreting it away in a horde. It is not particularly strong at the moment, but is capable of breathing fire. It is an incredible handful, both for mortals who are amazed by its presence, and its unruly attitude, being a creature of greed.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, but an older dragon would be appropriate for a Demigod. It will become more moody and greedy as it grows, but will be a powerful ally if its greed can be sated.
Scorpion Men - One of the many types creatures spawned by Tiamat when she was preparing for war against her treacherous children, something strange happened to the Scorpion Men, but it goes unwritten by the Mesopotamians. Whatever the cause, the Scorpion Men are closer to the Gods than they are to their monstrous mother, and this one was given to the Scion by Shamash, the decedents of one of his ancient guardians. He is happy to serve the children of one of his Gods, and is eager to teach them the old ways, though he is no smarter than a normal man. But, where he excels is in archery, an amazing shot, poisoning his arrows with the venom from his tail. For being an eight foot tall man with the body of a giant scorpion from his waist down, he is incredibly friendly, and kind to the Scion's Bandmates. This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, but an elder Scorpion Man, such as the ones who guard Shamash and are colossal in height, would be appropriate for a God. Their height should advance as they grow in power, just as Shamash's own guards.
Lamassu - A personal God, much like a Guardian Angel in Western thought, the Lamassu are large winged bulls with the heads of men. The Lamassu of the Anunna Scion was empowered by royal decree of Marduk The Great Marduk, King of Everything, and now watches over their charge every moment of every day. It is incorporeal, and invisible most of the time, only appearing when its physical force is required to protect their charge. It is friendly enough, though is incredibly dismissive of the modern world, explaining to the Scion how things used to be much better back when The Gardens still stood, oh, of only they could have seen them. Having watched over the Scion for their entire life, it will also remember moments of the Scion's past occasionally, and attempt to explain to them what they were doing wrong, or proudly explain how they influenced events to keep them safe.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, but could be further empowered over time by different Gods The Most Amazing and powerful Marduk, for higher Legend Scions. Additionally, for their guidance, a Lamassu could be an appropriate Guide, or represented as a Relic, passively protecting their charge. Or all three at once, though that would be just a tad excessive.
Great Lions - Five large male lions were given as a gift to a Scion by Nergal, possibly as penance for something Nergal did to their Divine Parent at some point in the last few millennia. They are powerful, and regal creatures, though quite lazy and would prefer if the Scion was less active and allowed them to sleep for the majority of the day as they wished. They don't appear to actually act like male lions are supposed to, interestingly enough. They are warriors, and hunters themselves, roles with the lionesses normally fulfill, though one suspects that Nergal dislikes this idea that his totem would allow women to hunt and fight on their behalf.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though they could be improved by becoming Nemean, or increasing the size of the pride.
Mušḫuššu - A strange chimerical creature, appearing to be a horned snake with the back legs like an bird of prey's talons, and the front legs like a great cat's paws, a Mušḫuššu was given as a gift from Marduk The Slayer of Tiamat from his personal collection of the beasts. Though the Anunna normally have issues, to say the least, with monsters, the Mušḫuššu has been tamed to some degree by them. It is a lot like a cat in disposition, and cruelty, though it guards the Scion it has been bound to closely. It does not particularly like when others get too close, or what it deems as too close, to the Scion, and while it does not get aggressive, it gets snippy, for the lack of a better term.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though it can be improved to be made functional for higher Legends. Though, the creature is likely to become more moody and primordial as its power increases, as tends to be the case with monsters for the Anunna. For it to be empowered to the height that it could watch diligently over a new God of the Anunna, a lot of convincing on the part of the new God, or their Divine Parent would be needed to Marduk The Greatest King Ever in order to allow such a powerful monster exist.
Attendants - One hundred enamored humans were gathered from the locals who had the poor luck to be around when Ishtar arrived to awaken her Scion. They were reminded of their duty to serve the Divine as little more than slaves, and denoted the Scion as the one who they must support. The mortals, under the sway of the ancient Goddess, have no qualms about dropping everything and serving the Scion hand and foot, and are very disappointed in themselves if they don't allow their attendants to do so, feeling it is a failure on their part. They are just mortals, not exceptionally powerful, or wise, but by their sheer number, they serve the Scion as faithful servants. Self-sufficient as they feed themselves, likely tapping into their life savings as they follow their Scion around.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion.
Leshy - A grumpy old man with green skin and thin vines for hair was dropped off during the Bogovi Scion's visitation as a gift from Rod, though, the Leshy does not seem to be particularly fond of the situation. He is grouchy, and will take any moment that it can to start talking about how much better his forest is than these damned cities that these annoying people keep insisting on building. He is quite vocal as well about how much he disapproves of the very existence of the Scion, it being a sin against all that is good and right in the world, but the Gods did not listen to him, oh no, they wouldn't bother listening to such an old creature such as him, he raves. This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though the Leshy could be increased in power, possibly adding some animals to the Retainer stat block to represent the animals that have fallen under his sway. A plot hook could be given through the Leshy as well, if he hears that his forest is to be clear cut for some reason or another, he would insist that they immediately set out and derail the situation.
The Grey Wolf - A massive Grey Wolf has seemingly adopted the Scion on his own accord. Thinking back to the competence of the last person that The Grey Wolf began to keep an eye on, this may be some sort of insult. But, even if it is, The Grey Wolf has taken it on itself to make sure the Scion doesn't manage to get itself killed, or fail in its quests. He is a shapeshifter, though prefers to be in his natural form, a wolf the size of a horse, and is incredibly helpful. Always trying to explain to the Scion how to go about their goals, and carrying them on his back when they have done something as silly as to not having learnt to ride a horse. Where Scions go, there don't tend to be a lot of roads, the wolf points out, speaking slowly and calmly as if it was talking to an infant, or an exceptionally stupid adult, so horses tend to be a good investment.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Demigod Scion, though it could be taken as a Guide for a Hero, or taken as both a Guide and a Retainer by a Demigod. The Grey Wolf could be empowered, growing stronger, larger, and likely more pitiful of the Scion who can't seem to manage to follow the good advice the world offers.
Underworld Bat - A very large, and very moody giant bat was entrusted to the Scion by Svarochich, made from the leftovers of Morena's own monstrous seven hundred and seventy seven eyed bat which guards the hand prints of humanity. It is about the size of a computer chair, and despises the light, trying to avoid it at all costs, and only listening to the Scion it was bound to because it does not want to bring Svarochich's anger down on it, for he is the God of the Sun, and she would prefer if she never saw the horrible orb of light again. She does not enjoy being tasked with following the Scion and doing as they will, so she has a habit of following orders to the letter, but not the spirit, intentionally misinterpreting things to make the Scion's life difficult.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though it could have its power increased as the Scion grows in Legend. However, if someone wishes to sneak by Morena's bat, they may want to try to learn how to trick the bat made from the leftovers of the horrible guardian.
Underworld Wolf - A large wolf was given to the Scion by Veles, who apparently had one laying around in the Underworld, it is quite unique for the fact that it has two heads. It is the child of Veles' own three headed wolf, and it dutifully follows after its master, protecting it just as its father protects the Underworld. Its two heads get along, and seem to share the same mind, though it is able to let one sleep while the other stays awake, watching vigilant over the Scion. For whatever reason, Veles seems to either think the Scion is in danger, or doesn't want them to die, having given them this powerful guardian. Though, knowing Veles, the truth of the matter is far too complicated to know for sure, and for all the Scion knows, the wolf may be Veles himself.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, but it would likely be a better fit for a Demigod. It can be empowered by whoever Veles got his own wolf from, though securing its brothers and sisters from Veles to get a pack would also be a possibility.
Naga - A multi-headed shapeshifting king cobra was present at the Scion's visitation, and never left, apparently having been tasked by Shesha to travel with the Scion as some part of a diplomatic agreement with the Deva. It conceals itself as a human when they travel through mortal environments, cities and the like, in order to prevent there being any raucous raised by its presence, and is intensely interested in all of the new things humanity has developed since the time of the ancients. He has the ability to manipulate water, and while it can't yet bring immortality, it can help heal.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though it is easily used at Demigod and God with the simple explanation of higher Legend Naga traveling with the Scion.
Vanaras - A troop of monkey men was given to the Scion to command by Hanuman, the monkey God. They are five soldiers, each quite capable at fighting with their bows, and are quite diligent listeners when they care to be, which tends to be when the situation is dire, since they prefer to wander around and explore when things are quiet. They can change their shapes, which helps to some degree, meaning that as they explore the world around them, they don't get into an argument with animal control about if they are animals or not, and are overall quite excellent Retainers.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though it can easily be improved by increasing the power of the Vanaras.
Yakshas - A diminutive and rather portly man travels with the Scion, having seen them out on some of their early adventures and deciding that they would be more interested in seeing the world along with the Scion than staying put. He is no more than two feet tall, and is always happy to lecture the Scion on the proper way to live and understand the universe, even when the Scion doesn't want to hear it, or cares in the slightest. He is a spirit of forests and the earth, giving him some degree of control over plants and the earth below, but most interestingly, he has a habit of finding rare gems that the Scion can use, trying to exchange them for goods and services.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, aiming down the path as having the Yakshas as servants when the Scion becomes a God.
Vahana - Almost all of the Deva have a Vahana, a divine mount that serves them, and is a key part of their iconography. They are a common gift to Deva Scions when they undergo Apotheosis, a reward for so diligently working to help the Deva succeed against their enemies. Each Vahana is different, but often it is a symbolic representation of what the God has power over. A peacock for beauty, for example. The Vahana are likely not particularly helpful, either in combat or in other ways that are normal to Retainers, but they can improve the God when they are mounted atop them, making that which they represent symbolically greater in some way.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a God of the Deva, and is likely an incredibly common Birthright given at their Visitation. They can range in power, but their power should likely go to improving the Scion, though if someone wishes to have some sort of warhorse or similar creature, it would make sense to improve it as a combatant.
Sphinx - A massive creature, the size of a school bus, was given to the Scion by Ptah. It is carved from sandstone, but is no less limber than a big cat, bounding across the ground, the world shaking as her giant stone paws crash down onto the earth. She is old, very old, having watched over many other Scions in her immortal life, though she is not a particularly good teacher, and was apparently dug up and reawaken by Ptah in order to watch over yet another Scion. She is a powerful combatant, and incredibly durable, capable of returning to a state of unliving stone to regenerate if harmed. She spends every night watching over the Scion and whatever Bandmates are around with giant, unflinching sandstone eyes.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Demigod Scion, but it could be easily improved by Ptah. Though, apparently Sekhmet has some issue with the Sphinxes, seeing the other pseudo-lions as contending against her for her husband's attention even though Ptah's only interest in them is creating them and inspiring humanity to begin constructing them again.
Embalmers - Five servants were given to the Scion by Anubis, each of whom was the master embalmer of the Royal Family at the time of their life. The five of them speak in broken English, and are much more capable of communicating in ancient Egyptian. They dress neatly, or were dressed neatly by Anubis, wearing black suits, though occasionally a piece of wrapping will float down from their sleeves. They are not skilled combatants, but are instead incredibly helpful assistants to the Scion, best at embalming, but it does not come up all that often. When their skills are needed for other things, they are quite adequate research assistants, though they make poor spies for their poor understanding of the languages of the world, and their dry, cracked skin.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and can be improved by adding to the capabilities of the Embalmers to do multiple tasks, and thus increasing the productivity of the Scion they are bound to.
Ushabti - A horde of numerous ankle high attendants were given to the Scion by Osiris. They diligently serve the Scion's every whim, treating them like royalty. They are skilled in almost every form of manual labor, carrying an unexpected strength when laboring for their Scion. They are able to clear a field in a day, clearing trees and dragging the stumps away, and have it plowed and planted by the next day. They can build a shelter in a Scene, though they are quite insistent that it is horribly done and the Scion deserves something far better. They would like three months to build the Scion something appropriate for their station, they explain, but it may take longer depending on how the prospecting of the local stone goes. Always quite disappointed that their Scion is on the move, making such a construction a waste.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion.
Temple Animals - Sacred animals are common gifts from the Netjer to their Scions, giving their Scions one of their sacred creatures (or in the case of some of the insect and arachnid Gods and Goddesses, entire swarms) for the Scion to prove themselves by caring for it. They are not particularly useful, or powerful, but if the Scion is able to keep the animals pleased, and most importantly alive through their travels, keeping it with them as they go on their heroic adventures, they will receive blessings from their parents, though mechanically this is represented as the Retainer's powers being used to give bonuses to the Scion as long as it is pleased and alive.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and though the creature itself should not become dramatically useful itself, asides from the minimum stat bonuses it receives by having the number of Dots allocated to it is increased, it should continually improve the Scion that has the arduous task of looking after this animal.
Water Serpent - A gift from Erinle, this long and twisting blue snake is one of the children he had long ago with Oshun, and convinced to abandon her. The serpent is quite intelligent, and is, currently, just a large snake in appearance, not so large that it is obviously Divine in nature, though the fact that it occasionally starts talking when it feels like it must interject into the conversation tends to make its Divinity somewhat obvious. The snake is skilled at manipulating the waters of the world, and is quite venomous, making it a reasonably dangerous combatant, though it is not particularly fond of head on fights, and prefers if it is allowed to ambush, or if it is able to lurk around during combats.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and can be improved by having the snake grow in power and size alongside its Scion. Oshun's temperament towards the errant child of hers may not be the greatest, and if the Scion is unlucky, her ire may also settle on them.
Slaves - From Shango's palace, the God commonly gives his sons slaves when he awakens them. They are all assistants in one way or another, ranging from expert chefs, to drudge workers, whatever the Scion would best be able to put to use for their own lifestyles. They serve the Scion faithfully, worried of any retribution by Shango for any attempts against the Scion's life, or trying to flee. If the Scion who was given the slaves attempts to free them, they will quickly point out that Shango is technically their owner, and therefore they don't have the authority to do so, but they would be hopeful that with even that failed gesture, the Scion may one day take their ownership from Shango and free them.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and can be improved by either the slaves becoming more powerful, possibly adding some enslaved low Legend Heroes to their Ranks with all the political issue this raises.
Slain Twin - The Scion used to have a twin, but something happened to them, and before their Visitation they died. Twins are quite important to the Yoruba, interestingly having one of the highest rates of twin births in the world, and for this importance, the dead sibling was bound to the living Scion to watch over them and help them on their adventures to attempt to become of the Orisha. The relationship between the twins could be good, or bad, but either way they are now stuck together. The dead twin is not able to interact with the world directly, and can communicate, but it is quite difficult. But, helpfully, they can travel unseen, making them quite good spies.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion.
Divine Pigeon - As purebred as a pigeon can be, this was a gift from Obatala, directly descended from the pigeons he used to help him create the world. To say it is not particularly intelligent would be a horrible understatement, having the mental capacity of a mundane pigeon, but it is capable of understanding incredibly simple orders. Its stupidity is made up by the fact that it is quite good at manipulating the earth, digging holes, moving sand, and other such skills, though these things tend to just make the issue of the pigeon being horribly stupid more problematic.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and increasing it in power could either give them more painfully unintelligent birds to have to deal with, or increase the extent to which the single stupid bird can manipulate earthworks. Both options may seem rather... bad, but, technically it is not up to a Scion to decide what the Gods grant them as they grow in power. On an out of character level, it may be fun to have a character desperatly attempt to cope with a stupid bird who can collapse buildings to get at something it wants on top of it.
Jaguar Warriors - A group of five warriors dedicated to Tezcatlipoca were put under the direct command of the Scion, and they vigilantly listen to his commands, though there is some issue in communication since they only seem to be able to speak Nahuatl and some incredibly basic English words. They are skilled combatants, and are supernaturally strong, and associated with the animal who's skin they wear. They wield macuahuitls, and are experts at taking their enemies alive so that their commander can sacrifice them to Tezcatlipoca after the fray of battle has ended. There is little doubt that they are also spying on the Scion, knowingly or not, for The Black Tezcatlipoca, leaving the Scion with questions of their loyalty.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and can be improved through empowering them. Additionally, Eagle Warriors are also a good option for a Teotl Scion of Huitzilopotchli.
Ahuizotl - a cruel creature that lures people to the edge of the water it lives in and drags them in to drown them, and consume their eyes, their teeth, and their nails. It was given to the Scion by Chalchiuhtlicue for some unmentioned reason. The ugly creature, something like a dog with small dexterous hands and an additional one on the end of its tail, is not very smart, but has the cruel animal cunning that is required to pretend to be a crying infant to lure people to the water to drown. It is quite stealthy, and has to be kept in line with threats and bribes.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and increasing it in power is possible, though one has to wonder if it will try to drown and eat its master if it gets the chance.
Nagual - Every one of the Teotl has a Nagual which they are able to find. They are a part of the Aztec soul that is centered in the liver, and are all animals of one kind or another. Each of them represents some things that the Scion is not. A caring father figure may have a violent and brutal jaguar Nagual, for example. These creatures live in the liver of their humans, able to appear and withdraw as they will. The relationship each person has with their Nagual is very unique, and but while they are powerful Retainers, they can be dangerous for the fact that if it dies, part of the Aztec soul is destroyed.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, growing alongside the character in power from Hero to God.
Immortal Dead - Mitchlantecuhtli watches over the dead to make sure they never leave his realm, though in a time of war that is growing desperate, rules can be bent. The Lord of Mitchlan released some of the dead he watches over to give to his Scion, but he did not release their bones. Instead, the bones of the dead were replaced with the bones of animals, giving them a horrific appearance as human flesh and skin is stretched over animal skulls, and flaps of wrinkled skin hang where the replacement bones don't extend as a human's do. They can't speak, their bodies too mangled, but they serve their Scion faithfully, filling almost any role they need. The Lord of Mitchlan releasing warriors, craftsmen, and others skilled in different areas depending on what his child could best use.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they should maintain Negative Epic Appearance for their hideous appearance.
Dragon Teeth Warriors - A gift from Ares, these warriors who rise out of the ground when dragon teeth are planted in the earth are fierce warriors. They don't fight in a traditional Greek style of unison, but instead each maims and tears at its enemies. They are not very perceptive, and incredibly vengeful, meaning the Scion occasionally has to put some of them down when they start to attack the others before the entire group frenzies and kills one and other. But, more are always in quick supply, for they can just plant more teeth to replace those lost.
This Retainer is appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they can be empowered by Ares and the Scion can plant additional teeth when it is not a danger to themselves to have so many dangerous warriors around.
Satyr - One of Dionysus' revelers was left behind when the tipsy and androgynous God left his Scion's Visitation. An unintended additional gift, the Satyr has decided to hang around the Scion to see what they do, offering their various party related skills which were quickly deemed to probably be to niche that are almost irrelevant. But, the Satyr does have his pan pipes, and is able to enthrall groups of mortals, and has some power over disorder and revelry. He is not very polite, or appropriate, but getting rid of him may offend Dionysus, so it's the best to just put up with him for now.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, though a group of them could be appropriate for higher Legend Theoi. Centaurs or Maenads would also be appropriate for one of Dionysus' Scions, with the Centaurs having more of a bent towards physical combat and lust, and the Maenads having a large amount of strength and ability to disrupt the natural order of society.
Pegasus - Just like the mount of Bellerophon, the original Pegasus born of Medusa's blood in the sea foam has since had many children, which have lived in the secret places of the world for millennium now. The Pegasus was given as a gift by Athena, it wearing a golden bridle and completely trained already. They are more intelligent than your standard horse, though not as intelligent to completely understand any language, and are capable of flight, as would be expected. The Pegasus is quite fast while running or flying through the sky, and has no ill will towards anyone, just a intelligent horse who can fly. Quite useful to Scions who tend to go off the beaten path.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and increasing it in power is not that difficult, just by expanding its capabilities as a powerful mount. Possibly giving it the ability to grant flight to anything it can pull through the air.
Mares of Diomodes - The flesh eating horses of Diomodes who perished when consumed by his creatures are fearsome. It is not very difficult to figure out why Eris gave them to the Scion, just to cause trouble, but it is a bit of a trap. If they get rid of the horses, Eris can get mad, if they bring the horses with them, they will probably try to eat the Scion. The only real way they can win is if they manage to break the mares, and somehow train them. If they could manage that, they would be able to avoid Eris' ire, and they would have some terrifying and powerful combatants under their control, if they can just manage to get that control in the first place.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they could be increased in power by either having more Mares, or by somehow empowering the ones they already possess.
Dragon - One of the beasts that pulled Medea's chariot when she fled from Jason after killing their sons was given to the Scion by Hecate. It is ancient, strong, and a fearsome guardian if given the chance to prove itself that way, though it is also an excellent chariot pulling creature as it has proven before. The dragon is no more intelligent than any other animal, but is incredibly powerful. It faithfully serves the Scion is has been bound to, and the Scion can expect that, since dragons tend to be used to guard valuable things by the Theoi, Hecate must believe that they, themselves are more important than a normal Scion for some reason.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Demigod Scion, and its power could be increased, though its size should likely grow alongside its power.
Talos - The bronze giant was rebuilt after Medea slew it for Jason, and the design flaw was patched up. Now having multiple veins of Ichor running through its body, the bronze giant is slow, but powerful. It carries out tasks given to it by the Scion dutifully, be it manual labor, combat, or guarding a location. Talos stands five stories tall, and carries a massive bronze sword. Styled in armor, the behemoth is incredibly strong, but durable, and requires no rest, making it a useful tool for any Scion.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a God of the Theoi, towering over opposition and serving the God faithfully.
Fianna - These proud warriors were released from Manannan's realm to travel with the Scion, something which is not entirely suspect since the God tends to give gifts to everyone's Scions at one point or another. They are proud, and happy to be back in the land of the living. They laugh, love, and explore this new world around them, following the Scion's orders without doubt, and telling them stories about their adventures in the land of the dead, and back when they still lived. They are good people, happy, and brave. But, occasionally, when the Scion is in serious danger, they let something slip and become entirely single minded about saving them. One has to think, who did the Fianna protect? Maybe Manannan is trying to give some hints here.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they can continue to grow in size as Mannannan releases more from his realm to travel with the Scion until they are almost a standing army in size.
Ennbar's Git - The God of many gifts in his misty cloak handed the reins of these two steeds over to the Scion with a wink and a smile before riding off on his own. The horses are like their father, and able to run across water as easily as it was land, and are very strong and fast. They make powerful war horses, though the use they are intended for, seeing as the Scion was given two, is likely to pull a chariot. Their ability to run across water is extended to the vessel they drag behind themselves, and will charge into battle under the command of the Scion without second thought. Biting, stomping, and kicking at those who get too close.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and their power can continue to grow with occasional visits from Mannanan.
Sidhe Knights - Fairy Knights, as those who were sent with Lugh as a retinue when he first traveled to Tara, were given to the Scion by their mother, Niamh. They serve the Scion diligently, but they are very obviously not human. In appearance, they are entirely normal, if more beautiful than they have a right to be, but once they get talking, they reveal their alien nature. They don't take a second thought to cruelty to anything that is not another of the Sidhe, and don't have much thought for consequences from any source asides from the Fairy Queens. This makes them somewhat dangerous, not seeing humans as, well, people, or anything deserving of kindness.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they can be increased by having them grow more skilled over time.
Animated Weapon - A blade that is so hungry for battle that it leaps from the hand of the Scion and sets off trying to hew enemies was a gift from Lugh. Obviously designed to be like his fearsome spear, the sword is a quite adiquate sword in the hands of the Scion, but also when it is not. The sword floats about the ground, and swings itself at enemies, trying to take the heads off of them. It has no personality, or any real thought process besides killing things, but it is quite useful all the same. It does, however, sometimes take a bit of muscle to drag it out of the air and latch it back into its scabbard.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, or greater. It should be bound to a Relic sword, and use a feature to animate it and have the Retainer take over while the Scion is free to do other things. This is a Retainer that can be, without any shame, have its concept be stolen and used for any other Pantheon.
Immortals - Serving as dual imperial guard and elite soldiers of the Persian kings, the Immortals were used all across the sprawling Persian Empire in her many conquests. The group of warriors wear exotic, and colorful cloth over scale mail, and carry assortments of weapons, from bows, to spears, to daggers, and follow the orders of the Scion faithfully. Where a group of ancient Persian soldiers came from is a question that wasn't actually answered by Mithra when he Visited the Scion, but they speak an assortment of modern languages, and don't seem to be surprised by any modern technology.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, and they can be improved by being blessed by Mithra, or Vahram, or from whatever the mysterious source of them is.
Manticore - A ferocious man eating beast was tied to the Scion by Vayu without much explanation as to why the man headed, lion bodied beast with three rows of razor sharp teeth was being given to them. It is as intelligent as a big cat, and is ferocious, hungry and desiring human flesh. The safest bet is that it is some sort of challenge by Vayu to either see if the Scion can survive with the Manticore, or if they can tame the creature. It can fling shin length poisoned spikes of bone from its tail to impale its enemies from a distance to weaken them before it attempts to consume them in their entirety. The Scion has their work cut out for them if they are going to keep this powerful, but dangerous pet.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion, or a Demigod, but can be further empowered by the Gods if the Scion is able to break it and tame it, so that they do not have to worry about a powerful monster roaming the land.
Roc - A colossal eagle was given to the Scion by Vayu, seemingly being the source for probably irresponsible gifts, to serve as a mount. The eagle is large enough to snatch up an elephant, making carrying around a Band of Scions not difficult at all for the giant bird. It's fairly intelligent, smarter than a normal bird at least, which means it's just not painfully stupid. It is an awkward combatant though, its size making it slightly difficult for it to do anything but swoop down and carry things into the air to be dropped or eaten, but it makes up for it in being entirely lacking maliciousness, and an incredibly quick mount.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Demigod Scion, and can be increased in power by the Yazata, blessing the noble creature as it carries around the children of the Gods.
Servant of Mah - A beautiful, iridescent hand maiden was given to the Scion by Mah. She is a star, despite all of the scientists who may say otherwise, and can point out the spot in the sky where she vanished from when she descended to earth to serve the Scion, able to name every single other star in the sky, assuming she had the time or reason to name the countless points of light. She is ancient, and may try to correct the behavior of the Scion and his Bandmates into the way she believes the world should work, sometimes causing friction from a modernity verses antiquity point of view, and other times from just some good old fashioned cultural conflict. She is a good diplomat, able to speak on behalf of the Scion, and can cook, clean, and do everything else an ancient Persian woman was expected to do. Attempts to change the star's mind, to see the modern world as a positive and the changes that have come for woman in society could be successful, but it would be quite a long running argument between the Scion and the star.
This Retainer would be appropriate for a Hero Scion.
