The God of the Underworld, and supreme lord of the dead who dwell in the halls of Michtlan, Mitchtlantechutli is a horrifying skeletal God who keeps all his subjects in his realm from attempting to escape, fearful of doing anything that could possibly draw his attention to themselves. Even though he has a horrific appearance, the God is not despised by his fellow Gods, or humanity, for he truly has a duty that is all important. None wish the dead to escape the bonds of Michtlan, and he keeps them in line by his sheer presence.
The God once decided that he required a wife, and sent word to the mortals of the world of his demand. The mortals took a newborn girl, and set about the gruesome task of flaying her alive, and then sacrificing her to the God of the dead. When she arrived in Michtlan, having never experienced life and thus being the perfect match for the Lord of the Dead, Michtlantecuhtli raised her himself, and married her when she was of age. She, a Goddess in her own right now, watches over the bones of the dead for her husband, an important role in the sustaining of the universe.
