Welcome to The Lab of Dr. Algebrina, the most brilliant algebraist of all time... and the most mysterious. Years ago, she vanished while working on a secret algebraic code. Her lab has just been discovered, and your team has been selected to break in.
To access her legendary safe, you must unlock three digital padlocks. Each one requires a 3-digit number, and you will only find those by solving algebraic operations and evaluating expressions.
Each member will solve one operation and evaluate the result. When your team has all five numbers, they perform a new operation with the solutions to get the final code.
You have only 60 minutes before the lab locks forever.
Good luck, Math adventurers.
Objective: Students will work in teams to solve algebraic puzzles involving monomials. Each puzzle leads to a 3-digit code that opens a digital lock. The team must find three codes to complete the mission.
Total duration: 1 hour
Tools needed: Printed handouts of each challenge, internet access, one shared virtual padlock.
Website to create virtual lock: https://en.lockee.fr/
Create a 3-number code padlock with the final answers of the three puzzles. Set a custom message like "You escaped Dr. Algebrina’s lab!"
Padlock 1: The Initiation
One variable: x
Operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, power
Value: x = 2
Final Code = sum of the 5 evaluated expressions
Padlock 2: The Dual Force
Two variables: x and y
Same types of operations
Different values
Final Code = operation with the 5 evaluated expressions
Padlock 3: The Final Code
Two variables: x and y
Combined operations (may include nested powers or simplification)
Different values
Final Code = combined operation with the 5 evaluated expressions
