The social sciences learning area is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. Contexts are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond New Zealand.

This is an in depth program that covers three key locations for a New Zealand Tourist. Students learn practical skills to help them plan trips to key international, national and local Tourism locations. This includes Pacific Islands, Australia and Rotorua.
In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to work in the tourism industry. Students will learn to plan tours, promote tourist material, write itineraries and plan trips (Finding fights, accommodation, airport transfers).
Students will hear from leading people in the industry and complete internal booklets that guide students through key areas of Tourism. Students have the opportunity to go on an optional school trip to Rotorua for a payment of $430. This is used for transport, food, accommodation and all tourist activities. This supports standard US24733.
Your work will be assessed internally assessed standards.
Standard US3727 - Demonstrate knowledge of Pacific Island countries as visitor destinations (internal)
Standard US18211- Demonstrate knowledge of Australia as a tourist destination (internal) *
Standard US24733 - Describe and promote a New Zealand tourist destination (internal) *
Standard US31071 - Identify and explain the cultural significance of natural and man-made attractions in tourism Māori (internal)
* Students can choose to complete either standard US18211 or US24733
