Learning a new language provides a means of communicating with people from another culture and exploring one’s own personal world. Languages and cultures play a key role in developing our personal, group, national, and human identities. Every language has its own ways of expressing meanings; each has intrinsic value and special significance for its users.

The NCEA Level 3 Japanese course in New Zealand is designed to further advance students' proficiency in the Japanese language and deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. Successful completion of this course equips students with advanced language skills, allowing them to engage in complex conversations, express opinions, and comprehend a wide range of written and spoken Japanese. This course serves as a strong foundation for tertiary study of Japanese or pursuing related career pathways. It prepares students for higher-level Japanese language courses, including university programs, which can lead to careers in translation, interpretation, international business, diplomacy, tourism, and education.
In this course, you will learn how to interact with others in Japanese, explore varied perspectives, justify opinions, and challenge the views of others. This includes living in Japan, sharing information about your future plan, tourism, comparing and contrasting cultures and values, investigating issues of mutual interest to Japan and New Zealand (for example, social, environmental, and commercial issues) and responding critically to texts. Students at this level are at the social competence stages.
You will learn to communicate in Japanese using a range of skills. This involves:
interacting with others in the class in Japanese through games, and pair work.
listening and responding to authentic texts such as YouTube videos, and audio.
reading and responding to short texts which include unfamiliar vocabulary
developing writing and grammatical skills by using mini whiteboards, online resources, and games
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and two external achievement standards.
Standard AS91553 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended spoken Japanese texts (external)
Standard AS91554 - Give a clear spoken presentation in Japanese that communicates a critical response to stimulus material (internal)
Standard AS91555 - Interact clearly using spoken Japanese to explore and justify varied ideas and perspectives in different situations (internal)
Standard AS91556 - Demonstrate understanding of a variety of extended written and/or visual Japanese texts (external)
Standard AS91557 - Write a variety of text types in clear Japanese to explore and justify varied ideas and perspectives (internal)
