Science is an important part of our everyday lives. It could be a new appreciation of how amazing the world is, or an understanding of how to evaluate claims made by different groups and organisations. This course will give you a solid understanding of how to think like a scientist, providing you with the language of science, and the skills of inquiry and analysis. Whether this course opens doors to a lifetime of scientific discovery, or simply gives you the tools to operate as a scientifically literate citizen, Level 1 Science is an important step along the way.
In this course you will study aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The work in Genetics, will allow you to explore how all living things are interconnected, and how information is passed from one generation to another.
Studying Chemical Reactions will give you an opportunity to investigate how the properties and behaviour of matter can be explained by the interaction of particles.
The Investigating Physics topic looks at a wide range of phenomena, through experimental investigation. This leads to the development of a range of useful skills, and an understanding of key physics principles.
Our work in Science will involve a mixture of discussion, experiment, research and problem solving. You will use a range of digital tools to support your hands-on learning, and be provided with work books that will allow you to consolidate your understanding, and apply your knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.
The Genetics topic is assessed with an exam at the end of the year. Chemical Reactions and Investigating Physics both involve experiments, which are written up as full reports.
