Media studies is about the active exploration, analysis, creation, and enjoyment of the media and its products. Media studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities, and cultures and how media products are produced, controlled, and distributed.
Through media studies students gain the knowledge and skills to conceive, plan, design and make media products that engage audiences.

The study of the media enables us to be critical consumers. It also helps us learn the skills to use the media to make positive changes in the world.
In this course you will learn about media production, the effect that the media has on society and details of media industries.
You will make a short film (documentary), study the representation of a New Zealand group in the media, watch Reality TV shows and analyse their relationship with society, investigate an media development and study narrative structure in a show.
Your work will be assessed through internal achievement standards and an external achievement standard.
