Media studies is about the active exploration, analysis, creation, and enjoyment of the media and its products. Media studies examines the dynamic role of the media in society, how the media constructs messages about individuals, communities, and cultures and how media products are produced, controlled, and distributed.
Through media studies students gain the knowledge and skills to conceive, plan, design and make media products that engage audiences.

The study of the media enables us to be critical consumers. It also helps us learn the skills to use the media to make positive changes in the world.
In this course you will learn about media campaigns and social action. You will study the flow of information as a global process. You will learn about film-making.
You will make short films to raise awareness about an issue and reflect on how effective they were. You will complete a research project about the global flow of information. You will investigate perspectives on a social issue.
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and an external achievement standard.
Standard AS90989 - Demonstrate understanding of the findings of a Social Studies inquiry (internal)
Standard AS90990 - Demonstrate understanding of selected elements of media text(s) (internal)
Standard AS90992 - Demonstrate understanding of characteristics of a media genre (external)
