Insert Overview
Te toi whakairo, ka ihiihi, ka wehiwehi, ka aweawe te ao katoa.
The arts are powerful forms of expression that recognise, value, and contribute to the unique bicultural and multicultural character of Aotearoa New Zealand, enriching the lives of all New Zealanders. The arts have their own distinct languages that use both verbal and non-verbal conventions, mediated by selected processes and technologies. Through movement, sound, and image, the arts transform people’s creative ideas into expressive works that communicate layered meanings.

Choosing Art Design as a subject can teach you very valuable skills that will prepare you for the world and a wide variety of careers in the future.
As an Art Design student your own problem solving will equip you with the skills to think creatively and logically and to take advantage of emerging technologies. You will try various illustrative and digital processes on the computer to build your client brief. You will be encouraged to think outside the box while still learning to use and understand the importance of the conventions of design.
You will develop your Design skills and ideas through:
Engaging in a personalised project inspired by your own client brief
Brainstorming and gaining an understanding of various design task visual conventions including (but not limited to) website and app design, merchandise, brochures and posters
You self-direct and extend your skills using the Adobe creative packages (Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign)
Participating and contributing to discussion using design terminology on how to critique design and improve your own work
In Year 12 Design you will enjoy being creative and thinking outside the box. You will need to be able to work with independence, autonomy and self-discipline.
It is recommended that you have attained a minimum of 14 credits in Level 1 Art as this means you have already had experience managing your own year long art project. However, if you wish to select this subject with no prior Level 1 Art experience you are encouraged to request an interview with the HOD Art. It is preferable to have some experience in Adobe Photoshop and creative packages.
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards and one external achievement standard.
Standard AS91310 - Use drawing methods to apply knowledge of conventions appropriate to design (internal)
Standard AS91315 - Develop ideas in a related series of drawings appropriate to established design practice (internal)
Standard AS91320 - Produce a systematic body of work that shows understanding of art making conventions and ideas within design (external)
