Outdoor Education is about developing an understanding and an appreciation of all elements of the outdoors. Recognition of the importance of our outdoor setting: what it provides for us and how we can help maintain it and look after it. This understanding and appreciation will be developed through a variety of practical experiences.
This course offers internal assessment and no external examination
This course is University approved and offers UE literacy credits
Course endorsement is available
NOTE: Students should not be selecting more than two PE options as part of a completed timetable. H.O.D. approval is required if students wish to take more than 2 PE courses (ie 13OE and 13PS).

Outdoor Education promotes fitness, personal development, environmental responsibility, teamwork, risk management and hands-on learning. It emphasises physical, mental, and social growth while appreciating nature, diverse communities, and teaching students how to effectively manage risks.
If you have taken Outdoor Education at Level 2 and want to continue developing your skills and knowledge in the outdoors, this course is ideal for you. The course is University approved and offers students the chance to gain a course endorsement.
New students are also welcome, but this is at the discretion of the Head of Department.
In this course you will learn about:
Outdoor skills: navigation, communication, first aid, teamwork
Problem solving skills: analytical thinking, adaptability
Risk Management: hazard identification, informed decisions
Resilience: overcoming challenging situations and obstacles
Self-Confidence: trusting abilities, taking risks
Ethics: responsible practices
Nature appreciation: valuing the natural world (DOC Care Code)
The major themes of work are centred around:
Adventure based learning (Adrenalin Forest)
Mountain biking (Colonial Knob, Makara Peak and Dirt Farm)
Rock climbing and abseiling (Titahi Bay)
Tramping (multiple day tramps)
River crossings (various local rivers)
Whitewater rafting (Hutt River)
Your work will be assessed through both practical and written internal achievement standards.
Standard US20150 - Demonstrate top rope rock climbing and belaying skills on Ewbank grade 14 and above (internal)
Standard US20817 - Demonstrate mountain biking skills on grade 3 terrain (internal)
Standard AS91501 - Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting (internal)
Standard AS91502 - Examine a current physical activity event, trend or issue and its impact on New Zealand society (internal) - UE Lit Reading
Standard AS91504 - Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies (internal) - UE Lit Reading
Standard AS91789 - Devise strategies for a physical activity outcome (internal)
Standard US427 - Cross rivers (internal)
Donation Request: $285
The donation request covers all offsite trips including transport, guide fees, venue costs, equipment hire and gear required for trips.
