The Health Science Academy is a programme for students considering a health related career. It is particularly beneficial for students wanting some extra support to ensure that they perform strongly in Science in Year 11 and are well prepared for Level 2 senior science courses. The course is taught in a medical context. Students do 8 hours of science a week (instead of mainstream 4) therefore the students are required to do 5 rather than 6 subjects. The academy has a strong emphasis on mentoring and building peer relationships so the students learn in a supportive environment.
Numbers are restricted to approx 24 students. Entry to this course involves adding it as an option to your course selection form to indicate that you are interested. Then during term 3, you fill out an application form and attend an interview. Selection is based on students who have the most drive to fulfil their academic potential for the upcoming year, will benefit the most from the extra support offered and have the most enthusiasm for careers in the health sector.
This course involves learning about how the body works and interacts with its environment.
It involves exploring the worlds of genetics, anatomy, animal physiology, microbiology, sports science, physics and chemistry. All science taught in mainstream Year 11 Science is included within the Health Science Academy course plus more.
Students will get hands-on experience with using a variety of science investigative tools including different types of microscopes, experimenting, modelling and observations to name a few. We use a combination of traditional and modern teaching techniques in the class and have high expectations of student ownership of learning. Study skills, collaboration, researching, literacy and numeracy skills are weaved throughout the standards. If available, we travel to Massey and Victoria Universities for Health Science career workshops.
Your work will be assessed through five internal achievement standards and an external achievement standard.
Standard AS91920 - Sports Science and Society (internal)
Standard AS91921 - Mammal anatomy/physiology and Investigative tools (internal)
Standard AS92020 - Microbes and the human body (internal)
Standard AS92021 - Chemistry (internal)
Standard AS92045 - Physics (internal)
Standard AS92022 - Genetics (Biology) (external)
