The social sciences learning area is about how societies work and how people can participate as critical, active, informed, and responsible citizens. Contexts are drawn from the past, present, and future and from places within and beyond New Zealand.

Classical studies is the study of the people, places, and events of the classical world and how they influence the modern world. Classical studies is an interdisciplinary subject: students engage with literature, languages, art, history, science, technology, religion, and philosophy.
In this course, you will learn to explore and investigate classical societies from a sociological perspective. You will develop a rich and thorough understanding of the communities of the ancient Greeks and Romans by exploring their social structures, government, law and order and religion. You will be provided with the opportunity to develop your critical and creative thinking as well as skills in researching, processing, analysing and presenting information.
Students will:
Develop an understanding of the social structures of the classical world and how someone's position in the structure influenced their identity and behaviour.
Develop an understanding of how social institutions like government, law, and religion influence the behaviour of people in classical societies.
Develop an understanding of sociological theories and their relation to their classical world.
Engage with primary and secondary sources.
You will be assessed on internal standards only.
