History fires students’ curiosity and imagination. It invites them to ask, and helps them answer, today’s questions by engaging with the past and imagining and speculating on possible futures. History presents students with the dilemmas, choices, and beliefs of people in the past. It connects students with the wider world as they develop their own identities and sense of place. Students engage with history at personal, local, and international levels. They investigate the histories of their communities, New Zealand, and the wider world.

The aim of Year 12 History is to further students’ understanding of some major historical trends and ideas, to develop the key skills of enquiry, interpretation and communication and to acquire the essential skills of research, analysis and evaluation and the appropriate presentation of information, invaluable to most careers e.g. Law, Journalism, Foreign Affairs, Business/Personnel Management. Students develop key research skills and the ability to communicate information in a variety of formats. They develop the ability to evaluate and analyse a range of source material in order to form a judgment and conclusion.
The study of Year 12 History goes further back in time and will involve coverage of several different topics from: The American Revolution c.1760-1791; Vietnam and the Conflict in Indo-China 1945-1975, Origins of World War One 1903-15 and The Russian Revolution c.1890-1922.
Students complete assignments for internal assessment and practice external assessments to prepare for the end of year NCEA assessment.
Your work will be assessed through internally assessed assignments throughout the year and external assessments at the end of the year.
