Outdoor Education is about developing an understanding and an appreciation of all elements of the outdoors. Recognition of the importance of our outdoor setting: what it provides for us and how we can help maintain it and look after it. This understanding and appreciation will be developed through a variety of practical experiences.
This course offers internal assessment and no external examination

NOTE: Students should not be selecting more than two PE options as part of a completed timetable. H.O.D. approval is required if students wish to take more than 2 PE courses (ie 12OE and 12PS).

Outdoor Education promotes fitness, personal development, environmental responsibility, teamwork, risk management and hands-on learning. It emphasises physical, mental, and social growth while appreciating nature, diverse communities, and teaching students how to effectively manage risks.
If you have taken Outdoor Education at Level 1 and want to continue developing your skills and knowledge in the outdoors, this course is ideal for you. The course offers students the chance to gain a course endorsement.
New students are also welcome, but this is at the discretion of the Head of Department.
In this course you will learn about:
Outdoor skills: navigation, communication, first aid, teamwork
Problem solving skills: analytical thinking, adaptability
Risk Management: hazard identification, informed decisions
Resilience: overcoming challenging situations and obstacles
Self-Confidence: trusting abilities, taking risks
Ethics: responsible practices
Nature appreciation: valuing the natural world (Doc Care Code)
The major themes of work are centred around:
Adventure based learning (El Rancho)
Mountain biking (Colonial Knob and Akatarawa Forest)
Rock climbing and abseiling (Titahi Bay)
Tramping (day and overnight tramps - Tararua Ranges)
Rafting (Otaki River)
Orienteering (Mazengarb Park and Waikanae River)
Your work will be assessed through both practical and written internal achievement standards.
Standard AS91330 - Perform a physical activity in an applied setting (internal)
Standard AS91333 - Analyse the application of risk management strategies to challenge an outdoor activity (internal)
Standard AS91332 - Evaluate leadership strategies that contribute to the effective functioning of a group (internal)
Standard AS91334 - Consistently demonstrate social responsibility through applying a social responsibility model in physical activity (internal)
Standard US457 - Demonstrate mountain biking skills on Grade 2 terrain (internal)
Standard US32835 - Demonstrate knowledge of weather information for an outdoor activity (internal)
Standard US20157 - Demonstrate novice rock climbing and belaying skills on Ewbank Grade 12 and above (internal)
Standard US20138 -Set up and undertake basic maintenance of a mountain or cycle touring bike for outdoor recreation (internal)
Donation Request: $245
The donation request covers all offsite trips including transport, guide fees, venue costs, equipment hire and gear required for trips.
