Food plays an important role in bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging, across the diverse cultures of Aotearoa New Zealand. Food is not merely a source of sustenance, it is a form of expression and identity. Through Hospitality and Catering, students will gain essential and valuable life skills and attributes, enabling them to enhance the health and well-being of not only themselves but of their whānau and the wider community.

The Health Studies of Foods (Kai me te kai) course focuses on a key area of learning, which is food and nutrition, in relation to hauora, the health and wellbeing of individuals, whānau, and communities
Students in this course will learn about the current issues related to food and nutrition in relation to health and how various factors influence wellbeing. They will gain insight into the different facets of hauora and discover ways to promote optimal health and wellbeing for themselves, their whānau, and their communities.
Through this subject, students can gain a deeper understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand as a bicultural nation, with diverse perspectives on hauora, health, and wellbeing. The course enables students to discover how their actions can impact hauora positively and explore ways to manage and change situations that affect health and wellbeing. Moreover, the subject emphasizes that hauora is more than just personal choice and individual responsibility.
Your work will be assessed through two internal achievement standards which are assignments and an external achievement standard (exam).
Standard AS92008 - Demonstrate understanding of Te Whare Tapa Whā (wellbeing) in relation to an activity (internal)
Standard AS92009 - Demonstrate understanding of the use of personal and interpersonal capabilities in situations that impact hauora (internal)
Standard AS92010 - Demonstrate understanding of factors that influence hauora (external)
